Really annoying problem...

I've just reinstalled Oblivion today, and after cruising for good mods, I finally got to playing the game. The problem is that every so often, the game locks up, and sounds from the game start playing in random order, followed by the occasional 'SHHIKIHSHHHHHIKIKIKITT" noise. You know what I'm talking about, that horrible screech that sounds like nails on a blackboard. Every time I'm forced to reset the damn system and boot back up. What's causing this? It gets triggered by some random activity (Attacking a creature, exiting/entering a room) at any time, I could be playing for 5 minutes or 5 hours. It's really getting to be a pain in the ass... help!!

Strange. Does this happen with other games or just Oblivion? If it happens with other games it could be some sort of problem with your sound card. If it only happens with Oblivion I'm not sure. I think there are some onboard sound cards that Oblivion doesn't like that there are fixes for, but I don't remember precisely what the fixes are. It might be worth posting what sound card you have. Do you have the latest drivers for your sound card? And have you tried shutting the sound off/turning your speakers off to see if the crashes still happen?

Okay, I tried disabling mods, shutting off music in the .ini, and lowering graphics, but it still screws up! Every time the game crashes it's the same problem, a sound was supposed to play, but something messes up and it sounds like it's going through a list of other sounds (When it crashed fighting a marauder, it was playing weapon sounds, armor being hit, rats, a scamp scream, and alot of screeching sounds, kinda like static) The lockup doesn't even CTD, i have to reset it.

By the way, I tried installing new sound drivers, but the speakers stopped making sound altogether, had to reinstall my old ones.

Weird! Try disabling your soundcard completely via the device manager perhaps? Did you disable all mods and start a new game? You could try extracting the Oblivion - Sounds.bsa file to your Data folder I suppose, in case something's somehow become messed up there.
