SuperSloppyPoo
Hey guys/gals. Been wanting to download GECK for as long as I can remember due to considering myself a creative person, just never gotten around to doing so until today. I have a question I was hoping somebody could help out with. Since Batman V Superman movie release is just around the corner I thought it would be cool at looking into creating the armoured bat-suit used in the movie as a sort of power armour in New Vegas (Soon be looking into making mods for fallout 4 as I think it would be better suited in that game.)Question is...On a scale of 1-10 how easy/hard do you think it would be? Will I have to dedicate a lot of time into it? Or will it be a relatively simple process? Bare in mind I have no modding experience. I'll attach an image of the suit for those unfamiliar with the design.
mindboggles
Most of the work load you are facing will be outside of the GECK in either Blender or 3DS Max. IIRC you will need Blender 2.49 to import / export the Nif format files or no higher than 2012 version for 3DS since both of these require special scripts that haven't been updated for later versions in a long time. You will also need Nifskope and I would suggest BSAopt to unpack the mesh BSA (game file archives) as the power armor mesh would be a good base to work from. For texturing (if you don't have Photoshop) I'd recommend GIMP, it's free and supports (maybe plugin required) the dds format the game requires. There are other options around but you will need to do some searching. On a scale of 1-10 I'd say it's about an 8, not really because it's hard but having not modded before and not having any 3D knowledge (I assume) you will have a long road ahead of you and it will take a very long time. Look for tutorials on youtube, if you find ones for Skyrim etc. they are also relevant since the process is almost the same. I'd link you to the Niftools site but it seems to be down for me ATM. madmongo
I agree. Most of the work will be in learning how to use a 3-D modeling program. I use Blender. It's got a pretty steep learning curve, and I imagine that 3ds Max is just as difficult to learn. If you go the Blender route, you'll need Blender 2.49 and the nif import/export tools. Somewhere on the nexus there is a package that has all of the right versions of everything all bundled together so that everything works. I don't have any experience with 3ds Max, but I believe that it has a lot of the same issues, i.e. that you need to get the correct version of 3ds Max. It will also need nif import and export tools installed. Texturing can be done with Photoshop, GIMP, or Paint.Net. All Fallout textures need to be in dds format. Paint.Net includes dds support now (it used to require a separate plugin). GIMP I think still needs a plugin. I don't use photoshop, so no idea on that one. Do a google search for Blender Noob to Pro and start looking through that. This should give you some idea of the difficulty involved.
