Jagex
Total conversions can be great, but they are almost never completed. Even Tamriel rebuilt for Morrowind is still under development (or at least its not finished yet). But, we all remember the ones that do get finished because about once a decade someone makes something truly magical. Most mods on large scale are rarely finished - bug fixing, updating old textures using techniques you've perfected over the course, balancing, increasing difficulty level, new challenging quests to keep it fresh, increasing the lore. Having worked on other mods and games who's interest has been on Total Conversions, I can guarantee that choosing one particular area is the way to go forward - say Minas Tirith. Make the people, the settlement, the quests, and release that little "World Space", then move onto another. That way, people have a little Beta to test around with, say what they did or didn't like, increase exposure, provide information on bugs, without being too bogged down with such variety and choice that it becomes difficult to keep track of.If this is going to be a liner progression game then that's an excellent idea. Release stuff, sorta in the model of an episodic game. Otherwise, it might spoil the idea of an open-world, in you're stuck in manageable chunks of the world. ;)
WolfySnackrib
If you guys end up making a mod of Lord of the rings, feel free to borrow my real name, I won't sue. I was named Legolas after the LOTR books.

rebelscum
Hello everyone, I hope you're as excited about Skyrim as me. If you're like me, you will also enjoy the lord of the rings series (the films or the books) as well as the elder scrolls. It isn't hard to see why, as the two series have a lot in common. I was reading some Skyrim previews the other day, and I saw a bit about dual wielding weapons, in particular they mention a "gandalf style" sword and staff combo. This set me thinking, and I believe that the Skyrim engine would be perfect for the ultimate lord of the rings game, and it should be built as a mod by us. Now I'm not talking a small, add on mod, I'm talking something like a master file, with a whole new map and characters. this would be a huge undertaking and I don't have much modding experience, so we're going to need quite a few ecperienced modders on board Therefore I'm posting today to test the waters and see if anyone would be interested in being part of such a project. I know the release of Skyrim (and its construction set) is six months away, but I think that this project needs to be started ASAP so that we can get as much preliminary work (concept maps, scripts etc.) finished as possible so that on release day we can start actual modding and get the project complete as soon as we can afterwards. If you want to join in, could you please make a post in the following format: Modding experience: how good you think you are at modding Mods: post the name of any mod you have published on TES nexus Area: choose what part of the game you'd like to work on from the following: Map & world-conception/programmingCities & dungeons-conception/programmingQuests & dialogue-conception/programmingCharacters-conception/programmingItems, weapons & equipment-conception/programming Please be aware that you may not get the option you choose, but I will try to organise it so everyones happy. If you have any questions, feel free to post.I'm a professional software developer and systems admin. If you need a website to host this/servers or to set up github etc let me know. Concept art, and prelim is surely off and running though? edit: you do realize there is a team porting a half finished oblivion mod to skyrim? http://merp.straygenius.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=31 Edited November 20, 2011 by chocolambot
WarKirby3333
..... this would be a huge undertaking and I don't have much modding experience, ..... ah, the immortal words of a naive person. i was wondering when i'd see a thread like this. the vast majority of total conversion mods for any games, fail miserably, and usually never get off the ground. I know of only a handful that have been successful (Fall from Heaven springs to mind) and they all follow a distinct pattern. i'll check back in three years and see if you've gotten anywhere :P Edited November 20, 2011 by WarKirby3333
Jorhag
Trustyperson is right. Size could be a problem. Edoras to Minas Tirith was supposedly a three day journey. You could probably cross Cyrodill in that time. If Skyrim isn't big enough, we'll have to cut back on wilderness size and move all the landmarks closer together.anything started, im f***ing exited for this, plz, hope some answers :D email me at : [email protected] when done or for updates thank u !
