CommodoreBlitz
I've noticed latly that after about 5 mins of play time, my screen goes grey/white with lines covering the screen and my whole system freezes. I reboot and my Bios gives me a Hyper Transport Flood Error... I recently upgraded my whole system so not sure what might be causes the problem.... I have a 450 watt Power Supply Amd x2 250 3.0 ghz cpu with a Msi 870-G45 mb 2 gb ram ddr 3 (Value Ram, $14) Ati Hd 4870 PCi-e (mb supports 2 but don't have the budget) 20 gb c: drive 1 TB external hd where NV is Windows xp Pro 64-bit and everything in the Bios set to Auto (including the Auto OC features....currently this has my cpu running at 3.30 ghz) And I am running all settings in game to Max except for Screen R which is set to 800x640 as I think I get a better frame rate even tho the game auto detect thinks I should run it at 1600x1200(it does work but there is some frame drop) I am currently working a large mod, and its hard to get any work done when I can only work on it for a few mins at a time. (the testing part, as tho it does crash in the Geck sometimes its rare..proble when I am using the 3d render window)
BigBodZod
I would first look at the PS Unit, especially since you use the AUTO overclock feature. That 4870 is still going to draw a bit of power and if your generic PS Unit is not up to the task and the 12vdc rail is dropping below spec it will cause havoc. What is the make/model of that PS Unit ???
CommodoreBlitz
Came with the case ARK, ARK Technology Inc... specs are AC-input 115/230v,5/2.5a,50/60hzDC-output +5v +12v -5v -12v +3.3v +5vSB totalKY-ATX500 32a 14a 0.5a 0.8a 28a 2a 500w I have reset the bios to Safe compatibility mode without an overclocking but it still happens....sometimes even when I am reading email...... I've set the Geck to save about every 30 secs or so so I can get some work done. IT does mainly happen during a game or something like one, I ran 3dmark06 as a test and about half way threw it happened. But as I said about email it does sometimes happen outside of games. I guess I could remove my video card and use the on board Ati chip I would have to run the game with it set to lowest settings, but I guess that way I could test if its the video card and or power it drains.... BigBodZod
That +12vdc rail is only rated at 14amps, not sure if that is enough including your graphics card too. I would try using the onboard graphics for a few days of testing just to see, if this seems to work then reinstall the graphics cards and see if the problem comes back, this will then confirm the need for more power. CommodoreBlitz
well, First my video card (not that it makes much of a difference, I thought it was a 4870) is a Sapphire ati HD 4850 512meg (with a super nice quiet fan)....but its moot now.....I had another "crash/freeze" and this time my whole pc would not boot just Bios beeps.......even tho my Mb manual is almost a inch thick not one page on Bios beeps I had to use an older pc to get online and check(of course this is after I dismantled almost the whole pc trying to fix it.....ram/etc) turns out it was 1 long beep and 2 short which not surprisingly was Video card error....I put my old (only about 6 months old bought back in Dec) Geforce 79000gs (very noisy fan) back in and bang system started right away..... I looked at the 4850 I see no physical signs of damage so hopefully the card is ok, perhaps it decided to stop working so no permenit damage could be done to it. I do have an old 640 Ps but tho it is an ATX its mb connector is missing the "modern" extra 4 pins I think it needs to connect to my current mb(it was last used on a P4 machine) Assuming my 4850 is fine, after this whole system build (new case/ps, mb/cpu, 2 vid cards (first I bought the 7900gs for $30 then I found the 4850 for $45) I am almost taped out cash wise... I do have another $25 left I was gonna spend on a good Dvd burner as my old one is recognized by my Bios as a cd burner only and the only way I can open the tray is by a bent paperclip.... The 7900 is about half the speed of the 4850 (based on 3dmark06) but its watt REQ is 85 VS the 4850s 130 Watts or so...

BigBodZod
You are not wanting to get any cheap ps unit like your computer as I think this is why you are having problems now. A quality PS Unit is going to be more in the $50 ~ 75 range for a 600 watt unit. Getting cheap on something that is a key piece of your computer is going to be more expensive in the long run. CommodoreBlitz
well, guess it will have to wait a few months, good news is I've been using the Geck for over 2 hrs now and not one crash using the 7900gs.... I may for the next 2 months or so have to play FNV at much lower then max settings but atlest I can really spend some good amount of time in the GECK to get some work done. I've already made 2 buildings including NPCs, now to start thinking about adding some scripts/quests.

BigBodZod
That last line pretty much sums up what I think.... Hmmm, I understand your needing to go on the cheap, with PS Units you get what you pay for. I have had very good luck with Antec, Cooler Master and Thermaltake units. I have a Thermaltake 850 in my file server and an Antec Quad Power 1000 in my gaming rig. No I'm not expecting you to purchase a $200.00 plus PS Unit, but you are going to need to spend more then $35 on a quality entry level model. It does indeed sound like your 4850 is drawing more power then your older 7900gs card, just continue to use it for the time being and save up :)
