My Big Fat Complicated Modded Steam Oblivion Reinstall Adventure

Over the past couple of months I have posted a few small updates and do not intend to update this information any further.

I have concluded with the reason why I believe a heavily moded Steam version of Oblivion will never run as well as a Bethesda version, at the bottom of post #5.

0202 USIPv1_4_0_Manual_install_7Z_version-10739.7z : BAIN

+ Don't select

- Unoficial Shivering Isles Patch.esp (0104 Unofficial_Patch_Supplementals-27710-3-3-5.7z will overwrite it).

This is probably a dumb question...

Since the USIP esp is the only esp in this mod, should we just omit this line entirely? I've been going through this list and am pretty new to Wrye Bash. Thanks.

If you mean "Should I completely skip installing this mod?" the answer is no. You still want to install the resources in the mod which includes a lot of fixed meshes and a few fixed textures, and lip-sync files. Only the overwritten esp file needs to be left out (or you can install the esp file and let it get overwritten by the one in the supplimentals patch - but I prefer to have as few red + installs as possible).

Thank you for the reply! I've been working through this slowly for a couple of days... I'm stuck after installing the unofficial patches and uFCOM. Here's my load order...

For some reason, if I disable "Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.esp" the game starts fine. If that esp is enabled, the game crashes right after the Bethesda logo. I've been looking everywhere for anything that might be conflicting with either the USIP or Supplementals patch. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks again.

Nevermind... looks like I found out what the issue was. I was working on your OBSE solution of installing from the retail DVDs and copying over the DLCs from the Steam installation. I didn't realize I needed the oblivion.esm file from the Steam version too. The oblivion.esm on my DVD installation was about 240 mb. I needed the Steam/DLC version which included the SI installation -- about 270mb.

On with the install...

  • 1 month later...

Sorry to bump this thread after it's inactivity for a few months but I used to have Oblivion and a full install of FCOM, unfortunately my DVD copy of Oblivion but my disc was cracked.

I am finding your install list to be incredibly helpful, a4nic8er.

Having recently re-purchased Oblivion with the recent Steam sale, I am very pleased that the installation instructions in the initial post in this thread are based on the Steam copy of Oblivion in mind, so I feel this guide is very comprehensive and useful.

In fact I'd go so far to say it's so useful that I wish it was created into an actual guide to save so it's information can be for a more permanent nature. I actually found this guide completely by accident by looking for more information on a4nic8er's combined HGEC and Roberts Body replacement BAIN mod other then what was listed on the Nexus, only to end up and find an excellent resource to make a "Ultimate mod collection for Oblivion steam version"

first of all let me say amazing!!

i could never do what you have done LOL, im way to computer iliterate for that

i am however trying to get a few mods working, but not having much luck at all

im running GOTY deluxe ed from steam, on a q6600 with 8 gigs of ram and a 1 gig grfxcard, and win 7

i have downloaded more than 25 mods with NMM, but sofar there is only 2 i can get working

i have been thinking my main problem was with OBSE 20, but im far from certain, however i can see you have a step i did not do, i just reread the OBSE readme for steam install and it mentions the first 3 files you mention, but it doesnt mention the OBSE_loader.exe

and i cant find a single file in the folder where i unzipped OBSE that says EXE, the closest i can get is a 116kb file called obse_loader which is listed as an application, is this it?

and where would i need to move it to? i cant for the life of me find a file called oblivion install o_O

With the Steam compatible version of OBSE you won't use an exe file ... all of the work is done with three .dll files. Here's a quote from the OBSE_Readme.txt (with emphasis added):

IF YOU ARE USING THE STEAM VERSION OF OBLIVION:

1. Copy obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and obse_steam_loader.dll to your Oblivion directory. This is usually "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\oblivion".

2. Ensure you have enabled the Steam community in-game, or OBSE will fail to load. Go to Steam > Settings > In-Game and check the box marked "Enable Steam Community In-Game".

3. Launch Oblivion via Steam or by running Oblivion.exe. OBSE will automatically be run along with Oblivion when launched. To disable this, rename or move obse_steam_loader.dll. You do not need to use obse_loader.exe unless you are running the editor.

What they are talking about in the second highlight is you will only use the file obse_loader.exe if you are using the Oblivion Construction Set to create your own mods.

ok

then that is hopefully one more thing i can scratch of the list of possible reasons 90% of the mods i download with NMM doesn't work

is there anywhere in NMM i can read what causes the yellow conflict icons?

I would suggest that you read the readme for NMM and then ask in the Nexus Mod Manager Beta forum if you can't find the answer.
