Haven't downloaded GECK, but have a quick question...

Hi,

Basically I want to change the way a weapon is held by the PC, specifically the sonic screwdriver from the Fallout Who mod... Is this possible with the GECK? And if so, how complex is it? Is there just options for how an item is held, e.g. pistol, melee, rifle etc...

Cheers!

To some extent. You can make it something two-handed instead of one-handed, or the like.

Ultimately the point you hold it and the orientation are determined by the mesh itself. Namely the coordinates (0, 0, 0) are in the middle of your fist when you hold it, the Y axis is along the axis of a sword or spear you'd hold, and X is forwards as you'd punch with that fist. So the way the weapon is aligned and oriented in that coordinate space will determine how it's oriented when held.

What you can do though is download the NifSkope application, which allows you to alter the .nif mesh files. Note that that does not include actual changes to the 3d shape, but rather the file structure. But if you just want to rotate or translate a mesh, you can do it as simple of typing a number there.
