Can I actually play this?

Recommended Posts

Right, so i've always hated the look of oblivion in vanilla mode, using high resolution normals aren't good enough. I started using Qarl's texture pack 2 and my computer didn't blow up when i loaded oblivion, so obviously my computer isn't so bad.

I get about 50-60fps inside, and anywhere from 20fps in the market district or bruma, where it's cluttered with scripts and npcs, and i get 40 anywhere up to 65fps in the wilderness. I do use the stutter remover, and cap my fps at 70, otherwise it stutters like a bugger.

I have a core 2 duo E6700, unoverclocked,

2gb of ram,

a 500gb hdd,

windows xp sp3,

an X1950xtx graphics card,

and i prefer to play at, at least 1600x900, as i have a widescreen 22" monitor.

I wanted to improve my graphics even more, but i dunno if i could use qtp3, i use a complete FCOM installation, with many mods, including the x117 races clothes and texture mods for armour, clothes and weapons. I'm not a massive fps junkie, i just want a pretty game that's still playable. I also can't do without AA, at least 2 samples, the jaggies really bother me.

Could anyone shed light on the performance i'd get or anyone with a similar set up?

I recommend you to use QTP3 reduced or redimized, rather than original QTP3.

I wasn't planning on using the original, that'd be too much, any ideas on performance for the reduced version?

I use the redimized version of QTP3 with my 4 years old computer and I have none fps hit, or very minor. My computer is

Ram: 3 GB

Intel core duo 1.81 GHz

Ati X1300 Pro

If I can use QTP you'll probably can use it too. But I run oblivion at 800x600, can't go any higher, and no AA either. Anyway, I think you won't notice any problem. But before, better check the VRAM used by oblivion. You must open the console, type sdt 13, and then tdt. QTP will use between 150 and 200 Mb of VRAM. So if that won't hit your max VRAM, you won't notice any fps drop. I'm not sure though, maybe if someone can confirm this?

Thank you ,that's helpful, the x1950xtx is one of the high end gpus from before the dx10 cards hit, so it does have a bit of a bite to it still. I'll do that, and check the vram.

Update - How do i know which one is vram, the memory monitored is.... 249mb, but there are plenty of other numbers. It's also worth mentioning that i'm already using QTP2.

The VRAM is the one that says Texture mem.If I'm not mistaken, your card has either 512 or 1024 Mb of VRAM, so, as far as I know, you won't have any problems with texture mods until you reach that limit. Also, I think that the difference between QTP2 and QTP 3 is minimal in VRAM usage, maybe 50 Mb or so.

Coolbeans. That's what i'm getting, it's getting clogged to about 350mb, but it doesn't go much further up, a difference in 50 mb means i shouldn't have much of a performance hit. I'm going to use the Redimized version, if that lowers my fps too much, i might use the redimized reduced, but just use the lite option, so i don't sacrifice too much of the appearance.

Thnk you very much.
