[Mod Creation Question] How does the sand in the Afghanistan desert area work?

I am planning on making a winter texture mod for Afghanistan, but I was wondering if there was a way I could apply the footprint effect from the desert sand to other ground textures, so that you can see footprints in the snow. It would make for a neat little touch.
