Sheogorath Voice Issue

Recommended Posts

I recently began playing Oblivion again after two years. I have the older versions of the original Oblivion and the Shivering Isles discs. In other words, I don't have the "Game of the Year" edition. Anyway, I've been playing Oblivion for about three weeks now, and finally decided today to check out the Shivering Isles again because I'm starting to become bored of Cyrodiil. The first strange thing I noticed was that I didn't hear Sheogorath's voice booming over the island as usual after the dark elf was killed by the guard. For example, I didn't hear the "Unworthy! Unworthy!" and etc from Sheogorath. I thought it was strange so after waiting for about a minute, I spoke to the guard and he goes on to speak as if Sheogorath just spoken saying "Did you hear that? Did you hear that?".

I proceeded into the portal to the Shivering Isles and everything seemed fine... at least up until I reach Sheogorath; his voice is gone. All I get is the dialog of what he was saying. Sheogorath's lips aren't even moving as if he's speaking either. This problem really destroys the Shivering Isles expansion for me because Sheogorath's personality along with his voice is one of my favorite parts to going into the land of madness. I don't know what's causing the problem because I installed Oblivion first, then proceeded to install SI after. I have the latest official patch along with the latest unofficial patches installed as well. I even browsed into the SI BSA package and found the everything is in there including the voice of Sheogorath. When I launch the TES Construction set, I can see that Sheogorath's character voice setting is unchanged as well, meaning that his voice is set to Sheogorath. I'm completely baffled by this issue because everyone's voices in the SI are working just fine except for Sheogorath's voice. If anyone can provide some kind of help without involving a clean install, it would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible you have installed a foreign language mod? Also, have you tried renaming the ini in \**USERNAME**\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion? If you rename it, when you launch the game, a new ini will be generated from the default. Sometimes that fixes problems that occur when your game was sitting around for a long time, assuming this is the same computer you played on before.

Hey thanks for the reply. After numerous hours spent looking into many of the mods I had installed and finally resorting to complete uninstallation and then doing a clean install of Oblivion :wallbash: , I figured out the issue. It was indeed another mod that was causing the problem; I already contacted the author about it. It is a race mod available here on Nexus called the Tolkien Elves. The mod changes Sheogorath's name to another language as seen in the TES Construction Set.

I'm not sure what else the mod changes about Sheogorath because I'm already frustrated that I did a clean install and lost all the mods I had installed previously, but I do know now that with the Tolkien Elves mod enabled, Sheogorath goes silent; with the mod disabled, Sheogorath's humorous voice returns and all is good again in the SI. Too bad I didn't catch the issue before I decided to do a clean install though... I'm not holding a grudge or neither am I upset at the mod's author for this issue. I'm just frustrated that I didn't catch the problem before resorting to a clean installation. Re-installing all the mods I had previously takes a long time because some of them are huge mods such as OOO and MMM but oh well. I'm sure the mod's author just forgot about some small details here and there and made a mistake with the English version. At least I figured out the problem one way or another :whistling:

Thanks for telling us. I thought it might be a language problem because there was a thread awhile back by a person who had a similar problem with lost voices and it turned out to be a non-English mod he or she had downloaded by accident. I use the Tolkien Elves myself but I never upgraded it from the first version. The first version does not cause problems with Sheogorath for me. The first release has different ears I actually prefer. I am sure the uploader will fix your version.

Interesting. I need to check that out in TES4Edit, but I have this mod installed also. Yet, just yesterday I ventured to the Crucible to catch some Fearsome Magicka spells and yak with Sheogoroth. Looking in Edit now...

It looks like this is a wild edit, an accidental entry. Sheogoroth has no changes to it in my plugin, except that the racial description is that of the Tolkien Elves. Interesting that I don't see that kind of data you mention the voice be attached to the Tolkien plugin. The issue can be fixed easily in TES4Edit, simply load up, find Tolkien Plugin expand, find Race expand, find Sheogoroth, delete race entry. Confirm, exit and confirm. Tested and proven. Again, that looks to be a wild edit, what modders mean by that is the edit has no bearing on the intent of the mod and was either unintentional or forgotten. I hope your re-install brings you happy gaming. :D

  • 3 weeks later...
Thanks, Motosxorpio! Brilliant diagnostics - Sheogorath's laryngitis is cured! I, too, had the same issue and figured it had to be one of the mods I'd installed recently. I've never used TES4Edit before - does it update the .esp file without changing the modified date/time stamp? The only difference in my \oblivion\data folder was a backup of the .esp that's a little bigger than the original. Since I'm using Timeslip's mod manager, I'm thinking I'd need to repeat this edit if I have to deactivate and re-activate the mod for any reason. Thanks again for taking the time to figure out and test a fix for this problem!
