If you have >12gb ram, you are not going to get the performance boost from the virtual memory. In this case, it is best to set it at the minimum (windows will tell you what that is for your system).

If you have an average computer (3-6gb), in general 2-4x RAM is sufficient. More than 12 does not further enhance performance. So 2-4X ram but not more than 12gb. (If you have less than 3gb ram, time to buy more)

For most cases, it is fine to use the SSD for this. Just be sure to "also" have a small swap file on the normal disk for memory dumps. Do not defrag the SSD. It does nothing, and can shorten the life of the SSD.

From what I found the initial should be 1.5 times your RAM and the maximum should be 3 times the system RAM or double the initial. I have 8gb so set it at 12gb initial and 24gb max. If anyone disputes that then let me know.

 

As for the hardware acceleration, seems you can't change that on the modern cards.

That should work. It is best, however, to make it one size-so it doesn't fragment. As every system is different, you may need to experiment to see what size works best for you.

 

You should be able to change some of the settings for your card. I think you'll have to download the catalyst, though. There isn't that much to it, compared to the past. Of course, if your lucky enough to have a card with <1g vram, it's more or less a moot point. Unless you have 3d off: in which case, ... :facepalm:

I went looking through Google to how to change this because AMD Vision Engine doesn't have a setting anything like that. I have HD5890 1gb card by the way. I thought it was a Windows setting though and read that in Windows 7 to adjust you follow the path right click desk top>Screen Resolution>Advanced Settings>Troubleshoot then it says if your display driver allows you change these settings you can press the Change Settings button but, alas the button is greyed out.

 

I'm sure my rig is using hardware acceleration but I just want to make sure! Cheers guys.

I have a 4890 vid card, and that option is indeed there..... and works. (there is a slider in the troubleshooting tab for hardware acceleration. defaults to "full")

 

Might be a product of what 'controls' you use for your vid card, I don't use the Catalyst Control Panel, I use ATI Tray Tools.

Actually, that's the same thing ;). The tray tool opens the CCP. That's what I use, too.

No, the ATI Tray Tools is a completely different app than CCC. MUCH smaller memory footprint, and does more. I didn't even bother to download the CCC, just got the drivers only package, and the installed ATITT.

Well I got the Tray Tools program, looks the business compared to AMD Vision Control. Don't know what vast swathes of the settings do but will have a read through unless any of you guys can point to any settings you think I should defo have or stuff to check that I'm not the world's biggest idiot and I am actually using the full power of the card! I appreciate the help, from what I've read elsewhere I know less than half of what I thought I knew and a lot less than half of what I should!

 

As for cleaning mods, I'm glad for Temujin that it has been such great success but I'm still getting crashes! I'm doing a full install so I can document for myself which mods start my crashing because previously I went off in such rush that I can't remember when the CTDs became so unlivable with.
