jangove
I installed the mod "Commonwealth Milita Armory". Stupidly, I didn't think to make a copy of the meshes folder before installing, and since it just straight up drops a different set of meshes in place of the original assault rifle meshes. This wasn't a problem until recently -- I like the mod well enough. But more and more mods I want to use rely on the original meshes, and without them, the guns look really funny. Anyway, unless someone can teach me something I don't know, the only way I can think to fix this is to either re-validate my files (which I think would break my existing mods, which, no and anyway I'm not certain it would work) or re-install the game (which, really, really no. Just... no. Maybe when the Geck has been out a while and I want a fresh start, but now? Dear god that would result in a lot of work). OR! If some kind soul could send me a copy of $:\...\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\Data\Meshes\weapons\machinegun . That would be unbearably awesome. Thanks. wax2k
The original vanilla assets aren't loose files in those folders. They are packed in the various *.ba2 files directly in \Fallout 4\data. That's the reason why mods with custom assets need to have archive invalidation activated. That setting tells the game to prioritize loose files over the packed vanilla files. The vanilla installation doesn't even include the \Fallout 4\data\meshes folder let alone any loose file in it. So you can safely delete that folder and/or any file in it. The worst thing that can happen, is a mod still wanting to access a custom mesh file in there and either using the vanilla one instead or failing to load the mesh (in case it is in a non-vanilla path). Depending on what the mesh is for, that might lead to invisible objects or CTD (the latter mostly in case of settlement workshop mods with custom meshes). jangove
Thanks! That... mostly worked. For some reason, it crashes every time I try and mod a receiver; I have no clue why. There are no extant ARs anywhere in my settlements at this point (I went on a vicious, Stalin-esque purge, eliminating the disloyal, counter revolutionary element root and branch). Still, it solved my major problem, and it increased my understanding of how the game works, which is never a bad thing.
PoliteRaider
Also if you ever lose or damage your original files, you can simply fix them with steam. Right click on Fallout 4 in your library, select 'properties' then 'local files' and 'verify integrity of game cache'. This won't delete any of your mods, although it might reset your .ini files. The original game's archive files though will be checked and any that are missing or corrupted will be redownloaded from Steam.
