To The Mod Authors...

Ok so, this isn't really anything important per se... It's just me wanting to post from deep down in the cockles of my heart (for all you A**holes out there, thanks for that Denis Leary).

Mod authors, thank you for making an otherwise good game FAN-F***ING-TASTIC. Seriously. Wow.

Never in my 15ish years of gaming on and off have I ever seen such an amazing, varied, detailed, and altogether entertaining community for a single game. Fallout was already one of my favorite franchises going back to the originals 1 and 2, and I was skeptical finally getting into 3 and 4 recently. 3 was great for a while, didn't even try mods on that one before I started looking at 4 and just had to jump on it. I immediately started using mods and just...

Fallout 4; cool.
Fallout 4 'roided up via the Nexus modding community; F*** ME SIDEWAYS AWESOME.

That is all. Thanks mod authors and fellow posters.

PS - DDProductions83, you complete me (no homo).

You seemed to have missed the better title, New Vegas.

I have it, I just haven't gotten around to playing it yet haha. I'll get there eventually, just... 4 looked so yummy. I didn't even finish the main storyline for 3 before I went ohemgee and lost my mind on this one lol. I'm kind of annoyed at some of the changes (i.e. moving further away from classic Fallout gameplay like the way perks work and the way questlines seem to be 99% go kill things and only 1% figure this out like a real detective/wastelander would). But yeah, the modding community hooked me.

NV goes closer to the originals. This is the shooter variant of Fallout, that's the story variant

Have fun!

And yet there's so much story in the background, some of it sometimes quite subtle.

Sometimes you come across a couple of skeletons, and just looking at them and the surroundings you can figure out the entire story of what happened. No books, no terminals, no dialog, just the skeletons and environment, and yet there's an entire tale there.

Add in some written stuff, and the stories can be heartbreaking, such as the one involving the shelter with the door and the air system connected to the faulty wiring (won't say more for risk of spoilers).

Some of the story even references real-world people or places, such as the entire background of Goodneighbor, aka Scollay Square. Scollay Square was Boston's red light district, with the Old Howard Theater being the aging gem, fallen on hard times since its glory days. It hosted burlesque shows, and one of the stars was Irma the Body (note that the proprietor of the Memory Den, inside the Old Howard Theater, is named Irma). Irma the Body was the stage name of Mary Goodneighbor. Vice snuck in a camera and filmed one of Irma's performances, and used that to shut down the Old Howard. The red light district was broken up, and the residents and businesses moved a short distance away to another part of Boston, known as the Combat Zone both because of the environment and because of the number of military on leave who could be found there.

I love that kind of in-depth real-world reference for a game set in an alternate version of the real world. I really didn't get that feeling from NV.

I'm currently playing my way through NV when I'm not making more stuff for my mod. I've done a chunk of the main story, plus Big MT and Sierra Madre. There is some good story there, but there's still a lot of shooting (especially since I've torqued off the Legion, and they keep sending assassins after me). The difference I'm finding is that NV clubs me over the head with most of the story, while FO4 leaves a lot of it in the background, where it can be missed if you're focused on blowing away that nest of supermutants... again... because they've kidnapped your settler... again... and taken her to the same room of the hospital... again....

Yeah, this is exactly what made me fall in love with the first Fallout. The attention to detail on random encounters is just stellar, so many easter eggs and little bits here and there that just make your imagination go nuts.
