The Dark Brother
I've noticed a small crack near the centre of my Oblivion disc and I'd like to know whether I can legally make a backup copy of the disc, for my use only? I'd rather not have to buy it all over again!
ninja_lord666
I'm pretty sure you can as long as you don't give it to anyone.
The Dark Brother
I'm pretty sure you can as long as you don't give it to anyone. How do I do it then? I've never had to backup a disc before, do I need any special software? I have two DVD drives. And will the computer have any trouble recognising it? I know that several games require the original to run due to various copy protection issues. Thanks for your help!
Sypron
Oblivion has fairly terrible copywrite software. Meaning I backed up my disc using the edition of Nero that game with my computer. The Copied CD works fine, and can even be used to install the game. I had to do the same thing a while ago. My oblivion DVD broke, had to buy another copy of the game ($50 AUS) and copy that. Now I have 4 oblivion DVD's, 3 of them working.

Thanks for your help! to make a backup copy* of the disk, you will need: 1. a blank DVD of the correct format of your drive. either - or +, or a multiformat -/+2. **an ISO ripping + burning program, such as nero, or one of many that can be found by a quick google search 3. once you have both of the above, insert the oblivion disk into your DVD drive, and run the program. Somewhere on it, it will say rip disk/copy disk/rip image/etc. you click that, and somewhere it will ask you where to store the image file. choose a location you can remember, and start the rip. 4. after it finishes, remove the oblivion disk and insert the blank DVD. then select burn image to disk/write image to disk/etc in the ISO program. then select the oblivion image file you just created in step 3. just sit back and wait for the disk to finish burning, after that you should have a second copy of oblivion. *if the disk is scratched very badly, the ripping process may not work correctly, and you have no choice but to buy oblivion again or copy a friends (latter being illegal, if you care) **yes there are more choices then ISO. but to keep it simple, and because it really doesn't matter in the first place, thats what im putting down. ***if you make a copy of the disk in the method i give here, it is for all intents and purposes the exact same disk (sans the scratch on the original). Sypron
If you act fast things like cracks may not make a difference, since that is physical damage only effecting one disc. My oblivion DVD (that got cracked) worked perfectly until the crack was bad enough that it didn't work at all.
Magnus61
I burned a copy of my DVD right after I installed it and only use the copy to play. Original is safely stored away. Never tried to install with it, so I can't verify it works.

Are these programs freeware? If not, can you tell me of a freeware one? Thanks for your replies, guys!
