Modding skyrim (think I went overboard)

So after running the game for a while and quitting out I found 237 orphaned scripts when I ran save cleaner. Cleaned them up. But even with them there I was running smooth, I had one crash when I opened up NMM with the game still running by alt-tabbing out. It seems to be a bad idea to do that.

Edit: Well it crashed in the inventory of a smithing forge, perhaps I have too many armors and weapons mods

So I have just one issue now. When I use the skyUI to rearrange the armor and weapons based on different classes or types at a smithing it freezes or crashes. Acoording to LOOT SkyUI is fine so should I start by cleaning the ones TESVEdit says have ITMs in them? I really want to fix this. Thanks in advance again.

Edit: it also crashed when there were like 30 NPCs in one cell (3 hold guards, traveler merchant and two body guards, about 5 militia warriors and then even more farther down the road of 5 imperials vs. 10 stormcloaks) it's like I had war zones installed but I don't so seeing that was really odd.

Edit: Where do I change these .ini files and what are they? Also some of these mods were added before I got NMM so removing them becomes... difficult..

The Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files can be found here: My Documents/My Games/Skyrim (make a backup first and place them somewhere else on your pc)

Double click will open the ini with notepad. When you exit the notepad, a message will ask if you want to save the changes. Say yes.

Note: there is a difference between the ini files so make sure that you make tweaks in the appropriate ini files when mod authors suggest it.

Never, ever change the ini files located in Skyrim/Steamapps/common/skyrim/Data

They are meant to be left alone.

A helpful guide to tweaks is here: http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Skyrim_Configuration_Settings

Removing mods that you installed before using NMM (which I assume you installed manually) will have to be removed manually.

Go back to the mod page and see if the author mentioned the appropriate mesh/text folder in his description.

That way you will know what they are called and which to remove. And of course the .esp (Data folder)

If he hasn't (some of them don't mention how to do a manual install) you could manually download the mod, extract it to a folder on your desktop and then see what the mesh/texture folders look like.

Be very careful about manually deleting skin textures. In fact, don't.

Skin textures overlay one another. They are all called the same, like femalebody_dds , femalehead_dds , etc

If you would delete them manually, you would end up with no head!

....skyUi to rearrange the armor....

I am not entirely sure what you mean. Do you mean 'creating favourite item groups for quick equipment switching' in the favourite menu?

From your previous post, I get that you freeze/ctd when you are smithing. Are you using the latest version of SKSE (1.07.03 I believe it is) as SkyUI (5.1) depends on that.

Make sure you have the following lines in your Skyrim.ini (My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/skyrim.ini)

[Archive]

bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

If it set to 0, change it to 1

If it is not there, you can manually add the lines.

And apparently,from what I read on the internet, certain armour mods can cause a ctd when smithing. Disabling your armour mods (not uninstalling) and enabling them one by one could help you find the culprit.

I am glad though you got your game running smoother and no more ctd's (except when smithing)

Well when you have the skyUI you can arrange the armors in the forge by class (heavy, light, or clothing), by body slot (head, body, hands, feet, etc) or by rating or by weight instead of the default alphabetical order. Whenever I try to rearrange them based on those values it crashes or freezes. Its annoying because I like to arrange my armors by class, since I'm primarily a light armor user. I do not know if it does this in the weapons, jewelry, or misc. smithing tabs I'll to go back and look.

Edit: I do have the latest SKSE.

2nd Edit: I think I'm in the right file, it said configuration settings in the windows file explorer page. Here are the lines under [Archive]

sResourceArchiveList=Skyrim - Misc.bsa, Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Skyrim - Textures.bsa, Skyrim - Interface.bsa, Skyrim - Animations.bsa, Skyrim - Meshes.bsa, Skyrim - Sounds.bsa
sResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Voices.bsa, Skyrim - VoicesExtra.bsa

Ah, I think I get now what you mean by rearranging. It is for quicker sorting so you don't have to scroll through the entire list.

Like clicking on 'equipped' or 'weight' in the inventory menu.

That should definitely not cause your game to ctd when smithing.

Yes, you are in the right ini place and you can add the line (just the line, not [archive] it is already there) under archive. You can even use copy/paste.

.....I just checked my ini. The very line I told you about is not in my Skyrim.ini folder. :rolleyes: (a while ago I used TES5Edit and forgot to add those lines back eventhough I had nothing bad happen in game)

I think I'll add them now, go ingame, see what happens as I am struggling with my first ENB ever. (don't you love modding :laugh: )

Edit: Adding the line under [archive] made no difference. I was able to use the smithy, no ctd/freezes when arranging the items by class.

I hope you find whatever is causing this.

  • 3 weeks later...

So my poor HP pavilion died. So I had to go and buy another computer, and this time I bough a computer with a quad core processor and an AMD graphics card in it, again an HP Pavilion though. I also bought a hard drive reader so I could pull my old hard drive and get all of my mods, and it worked I got all but two followers. Skyrim seems to run a lot smoother and faster, less stuttering. Less CTDs. It still likes to freeze in the inventory pages a lot though, that seems to be the main issue, I just cant speed scroll through them it seems, as it happened at the tanning rack when I was quickly looking for a vial belt to craft.. It doesn't mind running 20 hostile npc mages after me though. :P

Ok so I found a new problem, I put Tania the Hermit in my game, she didnt get transferred over etirely it seems, since I could craft her clothes but she wasnt anywhere to be found. I couldn't find her files in NMM so I downloaded them again and now I can only get her to show up with console commands and I cant find taniasgate power anywhere.... What is going on.... Can someone help? Tania is at the bottom of the load order, and I never had this problem on the old computer.
