ADD1CTEDGAM3R
Hey, everyone. I'm not sure why, but all of a sudden, many of the textures in Fallout 4 have become "soupy." It's possible that this is a mod conflict of some kind, I suppose, but I find it highly unlikely, seeing as I haven't recently installed any new textures. Before this issue arose, I was playing the game with the same texture mods installed for the longest time without running into this issue... Here are a couple of screenshots of what I'm talking about. http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee405/iDynamikGFX/2016-03-03_00001.jpg http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee405/iDynamikGFX/2016-03-03_00002.jpg Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the vanilla textures are really THAT bad. Surely I would have noticed them before if that were the case. I use a variety of texture mods, which I list out down below for you to take a look at if you'd like to help diagnose and treat this issue. Perhaps I need to go through and reinstall them all, one by one? Could it maybe be the "FPS Dynamic Shadows - Shadow Boost" mod that's somehow causing this? I'm stumped, because it started happening so suddenly. What's weird also is that it doesn't happen with all textures... Weapons, armor, landscape (trees, rocks, roads), building textures added by mods, etc. are all fine. A variety of vanilla buildings, cars, guard rails, floors, walls, barrels, concrete block piles, etc. are all really soupy looking like in those screenshots. Texture Mod List: FAR - Faraway Area Reform (LOD) by SparrowPrinceVivid Fallout - Landscapes hy Hein84Vivid Fallout - Rocks by Hein84Vivid Fallout - Trees by Hein84Alternative Synth Eyes by Twisted MethodAnimated Bobbling Bobbly Bobbleheads by DDProductions83Better Computer Terminals by Jomla97Better Handmade Weapon Textures by Mike_trxBetter Settlements and Camps 2 by DUST2DEATHCeanos Brahmin by CeanosChem Redux by herpderp2332Clear Reflex Lenses by rateforxCompact Jetpack by RangarokinDetailed Deathclaws by jimFallout 4 - Texture Optimization Project by torcherFallout Texture Overhaul PipBoy UHD 4K by GorgullaFallout 4 Texture Overhaul Power Armors UHD 4K by Gorgulla (I use the 4K Frame, 4K T-45 and 4K T-60)FCO - HD Eyes by DrumberGrass Performance Optimized 1K by jensen01Immersive Maps 2K - 4K by Reptileye (8K Satellite version)Immersive Mouth and Teeth by ClearanceClarenceJesters Ammo Retexture Mod by JesterNew Road Enhanced by Rufus696 (Main file + Dark version file)Patch Job by StuykPatrolman Sunglasses Retexture by CastellRadical Roaches by Mike_trxStriking StingWing by Mike_trxWasteland Creatures Redone by DOOM4K Combat Armor Retexture by Leyr4K HD Textures - Power Armors by Coldchaos (I use the X-01 only)Gorgeous Glowing Plasma Weapons by DiranarLaser Weapons and Musket Reskin by GarnetSanScratchMade Combat Shotgun and Rifle by MilleniaScratchMade Double Barrel Shotgun by Millenia
ADD1CTEDGAM3R
Some of the mods listed in that Texture Mod List aren't really "texture mods" per se, but I thought I'd list them anyways.
bladexdsl
that happens now and than it's cos they changed how the textures load in the patches instead of all at once they now load on the fly. prob is sometimes they don't load at all...it's happened to me a few times just leave the area and come back and it usually fixes itself. Are you for real? That's so lame! Why would they do that; to try and increase stability and performance? I mean, I get that... But now I'm walking around with soupy textures all over the place! I'm wondering if it's not something else though, because it's happening A LOT. Almost everywhere I go I can see some soupy textures, and I never noticed this before. Although, it does sound like it may have been the patch(es) that did it, since it just started happening all of a sudden. I hadn't installed any new textures or anything, but I obviously did get the patch(es).
bladexdsl
they did it to cut back on loading times. but IMO it makes things worse.
ADD1CTEDGAM3R
they did it to cut back on loading times. but IMO it makes things worse. I haven't noticed a difference in loading times, to be honest. I'm running the game off of an SSD, so my loads are pretty quick. The only thing I've noticed since the patch(es) is that my textures are messed up! :(

kevkiev
Yeah, textures can do that in this game. I experience the same thing with meshes sometimes too. Was crossing a bridge in the dark recently (I run the darker night mods) and, too late, noticed one of those rusty segments hadn't loaded and I dropped into the river.. Although, sometimes, I'll run into this and it seems the only way to "kickstart" the game back to normal is to verify cache in steam. But I guess that's not exactly what you're experiencing. Anyways, when it happens next time, you could try staying still and waiting to see if the textures eventually load. (might take a completely immersion-breaking length of time). As painful as long screen loading times are (I don't have an SSD), I'd rather sit through that than deal with this crap in-game.

I would have a go at verifying the game cache through Steam, but I think that might cause my edited .INI files to be downloaded and replaced, wouldn't it? I don't remember if the game verifies those or not, and I don't want that to happen! Bethesda definitely didn't consider that players might prefer the longer loading screens over these types of issues during their gameplay. I know I certainly would! kevkiev
Yup, major suckdom. When I go to the cells of my really built up settlements, I have to linger for the buildings, turrets, and even NPCs to render. Learned to live with it... kinda  (Maybe serves me right for doubling the build size limit in console - in most of my settlements I built about half the extra size, so they're mostly about 150% above vanilla size. Plus I run a lot of high-res textures. (Starting to rethink doing that for FO4. Never gave me a problem on FO3, FONV or Skyrim.) Verifying cache will indeed screw up some of your INIs. I haven't done much INI editing (just enabling mods, FOV, and a couple other minor things), and have copies of all my edits, so I just go through a quick routine of putting everything back right after verifying. IIrc, some of the changes stick, but I can't remember which INI(s). I know you can set them to read only but, if I do that, my native resolution (2560x1600) doesn't display in the game options when I first run the game after verifying (I only get 2560x1440). Perhaps I could hard write the resolution into my INIs to get around it, but I haven't yet and it only takes a minute to redo my INIs when I verify cache (which isn't very often). Depending on your resolution, maybe you wouldn't run into that problem at all. I suppose the quickest way would be just to keep copies of your entire edited INIs and replace the post-verification ones without even opening them. Makes me feel better to look, I guess
