I'd like some feedback on a laser weapon design I'm working on

I just realized this topic is better suited for the mod page tread rather than the mod request one, so no intentional spam or anything...

I posted about this a while ago but the thread has been buried under countless other post and my question has changed so I decided to make a new post.

First of all I'd like to point out that have no modding experience nor any sort of 3D modelling skill.

I'm working on a concept art for a laser weapon that uses fusion cores as ammo I'm using the cryolator animations to avoid having to wait for the creation kit and having to make custom animations, I had help from some awesome people figuring out how to best make this thing work.

I understand that most modders are too busy with their own projects to do any work to help me out.

I'm just asking a few tips on how to best learn 3D modelling and maybe some feedback on the usability of my concept art as a template for a 3D model. I got myself a student license for Maya 2016 but so far I found the software to be very confusing and unintuitive.

here's a link to my deviant art page where you can find the in progress concept art: http://martiniman1.d...ation-592463231

Huh, that looks pretty neato.

I've got a concept going for a massive rotary energy weapon that's powered by a fusion core, basically a gigantic Fusion Cannon.

But anyway, to answer your question, I'd say the best software to learn the very basics of 3D modelling - making the mesh shape itself, UV Mapping, and creating textures - is Blender. Blender is free, requires no license or registration, and has roughly the same capabilities if not moreso in some respects than 3DSMax and possibly Maya, from what I've found. Don't take what I say to mean that Blender is necessarily the best, but I personally think it's suited for beginners because the interface is fairly easy to figure out once you know where everything else, and above all else actual modelling can be done fairly quickly.

If you want, I could take a shot at modelling your concept art, and I'll get back to you with the results. In the meantime, the best way to learn Blender is look at tutorial videos on youtube and to just experiment basically. Take your time working things out, and they'll eventually work themselves out soon enough.

thanks,

I installed blender and I'm trying to follow some tutorials atm. I'd really appreciate it if you gave it a shot yourself. the design isn't completely done yet though, there are a few little things I'd like to add change first but the basic shape is pretty much finalized (the top one if you hadn't guessed. I took a bunch of elements directly from the existing laser weapons to make my life a bit easier and to make it fit in with the others, so you can try to use those if that's even possible without the creation kit? At least I haven't been able to find any of them in my game files yet...

Let me know when/if you feel like giving it a try and I'll send you some extra files that might come in handy.

Glad to see you're still working on this!

As for using the in game files, have you used something like B.A.E to extract the meshes and textures from the .ba2 archives in your data folder yet?

After that you could open them in nifskope and covert em to an .obj so they could load up in blender.

Looks nice, few things that you could consider in my opinion:

  • Adding a buttpad as the end of the receiver seems pretty uncomfortable.
  • Making the barrel slightly shorter and/or consider adding a folding or fixed bipod. The rifle seems really front heavy due the thick barrel, so this would make it more plausible.
  • Improving the ergonomics of the grip & enlarging the trigger guard. Although most vanilla laser gun grips have the ergonomics of a brick, you might expect more from a sniper rifle.
