Rank equivalents

How does BOS ranks correspond to the pre war military? I was just wondering about Paladin Danse. He's so full of himself. But what would his rank be in the US Army and/or the Marine Corps? Curiosity for curiosity's sake :whistling:

The BoS also uses different ranking depending on the region you are in http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Brotherhood_of_Steel_ranks

Generally I think the BoS kinda just made it up as they saw fit, as each region has a considerably different structure.

But if you're looking at Danse whos East Coast BoS - He had a sponsor and wasnt born into the BoS so he started at "Initiate" and then worked up to "Paladin" which is 6 promotions essentially. 3 more promotions and he could have be topped out in the army division at "Sentinel". Technically after that is "Elder" which I suppose is the BoS version of generals with a "Head Elder" or commander and chief leading them.

IMO, paladins would be kind of like a mid-tier officer. Given the BoS rank list fluctuates depending on the area, it can't really compare straight across the board.

Think more like this...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_British_Empire

Where a Paladin (Danse) would be equivalent to a Commander.

But if I had to make an estimate, given I was in the NAVY I'd say paladin would probably be somewhere between Lieutenant and Commander.

Still a misnomer to cross compare it to service ranks, it is more so like a lordship, a paladin is basically a Baron, you can command troops, and lead formations but you wont be the big dog on campus.

Um, yeah. Which is exactly why I already stated that very same concept ("can't really compare straight across the board"), followed by specifically saying "Think more like this" and linked the British Knighthood , which it *directly* correlates to. A Commander in the sense of Knighthood isn't the same as saying a Commander in military rank, it precedes whatever other titles the individual might have such as Lord, Lady, whatever.

It's a heirarchical structure based on knighthood and medieval feudalism versus a modern military structure, you're trying to correct me with the very same answer I gave lol. The BoS heirarchy is basically a hybridized result of combining the modern and medieval structures.

The estimate of "between Lieutenant and Commander" is merely a sideways comparison based on how many ranks are in the list and the fact that they're both considered 'officers'. I was merely humoring the OP's train of thought.

Thank you very much. A very interesting discussion coming up with no real answers. Much along my own line of thought - and the Wiki- concerning the hierachy of the BOS. Well -if any of you read my story you will soon know why I asked :D

I did too give an answer lol, even if it is a hypothetical one. If you want it translated from NAVY to ARMY/MARINE ranks just look up the corresponding branches (I don't know those two by heart).

I would put the Paladin on par with the oak leaf ranks (basically just get rid of the gold variants, thus cutting the ranks making the number available equal to the Brotherhood setup if you also condense the Admiral/General rankings into one). Reasoning for this being the division of the ranks into two sections, enlisted and officer. If it were me, I'd consider Knight-Sergeant the highest of the enlisted rankings, with Knight-Captain and up being the officers, and a similar division of 3 and 3 for the Air Force and Scribes.

Excellent. I was thinking along these lines. Hoping the Paladin would translate to a higher ranking field officer - but not quite a staff officer (Colonel and up if I understand it the right way). It is nice to have it confirmed by someone who knows more about it than I do myself. Thanks
