HeyYou
For one of the people responsible for running the country he showed extremely poor judgment. And by refusing to resign shows his high opinion of himself (ego) is not well founded. Anyone who is in any high office can expect his private life to be exposed at any time. Only a fool would keep doing the kind of things he has been doing and not expect it to show up on the news. Whoever runs against him in the next election will enjoy the free campaign gifts that Weiner (AKA Weener) has given them. Do you want a fool and an egomaniac for your congressman? That doesn't make him much different than any of the others.......Which is my point. @csgastors, how is that blackmail? I am saying he opened himself up to BE blackmailed. Not a good thing for a government official. You know, like if you don't support X law or get money for Y company we are going to release Z information on you. I mean how many girls had pictures of him and these are girls he knew ONLY online. Look how damaging this has been for him, what do you think he would have done to prevent someone outing him? Turns out he was stupid enough to out himself in the end but that's not really the point.Blackmailing would be illegal, plus I am not sure what else could be released. He already has one picture out, don't see how more could hurt him much. Are you missing the point on purpose? Did you actually read my post? Of course it's a little late now but it shows how bad his judgement is that he would put himself in such a position. Are you seriously saying that something being illegal stops people from doing it? One of the girls could have been working for a foreign government, he had no idea who these people really were beyond a Facebook profile.A penis is a useful piece of US military intelligence? Why would it matter if they somehow DID work for foreign governments. Why is his judgement bad? From what I know he mistyped something in twitter that made it public, then he deleted it shortly. If we are going to get congressmen to resign based on bad judgement, everyone would have to resign. Or is it only if its sexual? To me people dying in pointless wars and bankers/corporations getting free money is far worse judgement then sending a sexual picture. Ah, but, the government can point at this guys lapse in judgement, to draw attention away from the other stupid stuff they are doing. Its useful to discredit your opponents. Its my understanding that he sent a bunch of pictures of him in his underwear to a selection of females. Probably something a pretty good percentage of men have done..... (ok, so, maybe a small percentage...) Some of the ladies might even like it. Who knows. Thing is though, the "christian right" sees this as a cardinal sin, almost as bad as sex out of wedlock, and want to crucify him for it. It is patently obvious the american people as a whole really couldn't care less about it, after all, look at Slick Willy, and what he did in the Oval office..... the "christian right" tried to impeach him for it. Didn't work. All this is, is one side taking advantage of a bit of news coverage, for something that really doesn't even rate a single paragraph on page six. (maybe in the comics?) Politics as usual here in the good ol' US of A.

I will try one more time:Congressman sends pictures of his junk to random people on the net (not just in underwear, fully nude and erect.) Person who receives pic calls congressman and says "if you don't support X bill I will release that pic to the press."or "give me X classified info or I will release the pic"Just because it's too late for that to happen now does not mean that it could not have happened. I do think its just politics, there is no real reason for this. After all, look at the person who broke the story...

Then again, he might just well. Congressmen do that a lot after all... I get what your saying now anyways. Seemed to me like you were saying he could be blackmailed NOW. It was understandable why I didn't fully get what you meant... However, it doesn't matter at this point. The pictures are already released, blackmail can't happen. I am sure other people in congress have things that can be used to black mail them, as I said there was recently a republican who did almost the same thing. People in congress have done it before, and it seems like it will happen again. I don't see any reason for him to resign after it happening. Also do people in congress automatically get a secruity clearance upon getting elected, and if so what level? I am not even sure he could give out much classified information if he wanted to. ginnyfizz
I think the problem with what Slick/Bent Willy did was not just that he was a sleazeball, nor was it just a problem for the Christian right, whoever it was tried to impeach him. The problem was that he abused his high office and was suspected of having used undue influence on a person deemed to be under his command. I am sorry that some of you guys don't appear to think that kind of sexual harassment might be a problem. Isn't Mr Weener doing the same?

ginnyfizz
Marharth, you surely must remember that Bent Willy was having it away with a White House intern, one Ms Lewinsky? That is as much an abuse of power and as improper as a doctor having a relationship with a patient. And as for Mr Weiner, he is posting pictures of his genitalia all over the internet, some of us have seen the not very pretty sight (let's say I am not impressed, Weener indeed....) and you are certainly not going to get me posting the links here as that's against the rules. He's a ruddy congressman for goodness sake, and he is abusing his power in that he could well be doing this because of who he is, because, as bben46 so rightly puts it, he is a fool and an egomaniac who thinks he is infallible. His behaviour is offensive to his constituents and to his office. You should be glad that in the USA politicians and stars can still get held to account. not to mention ridicule, for such gross behaviour. Over here in the UK we would not be allowed to discuss it - I assume you have heard of super injunctions?
Kendo 2
Also do people in congress automatically get a secruity clearance upon getting elected, and if so what level? I am not even sure he could give out much classified information if he wanted to. Congressmen have an extremely low Government Service rating. The Post Master at your local Post Office and enlisted men working in base armories have higher clearances. BUT, that doesn't mean that he wouldn't have information exclusive to any subcommitties he might be a part of or have his arm twisted to push an agenda he wouldn't otherwise endorse. I personally don't care if he takes his shirt off and flexes for a camera. My one issue is that he LIED and lied big. He was hacked, he didn't do it, etc. If he had justed fessed up and said, 'Yeah, you caught me.' no one who matters (aside from a few Republican Congressmen) would be making a stink about it. Him flexing his little boy muscles is no big deal, him abusing the trust placed in him when he was elected by LYING is a big deal. It shows he's not willing to be a stand up kind of guy. If he wouldn't hold himself accountable for this silliness, just imagine what lies he would spin and how much smoke and mirors squawking he would do if he was caught doing something REALLY REALLY wrong. The guy is unreliable.
