Captcha troubles

So I finally managed to regain access to my ancient account. Yay!

In the process, I must've gone through several dozen different captchas on the "lost password" screen, plus a few on the "reset password" link that was finally sent to me via email.

It's hard to know how many were actual errors on my part, but I can't possibly believe they all were. ReCaptcha has gotten a lot harder since I last used it, and there are a lot of ambiguous characters due to its distortion, but some of them were plain as day and were still rejected.

It got to the point where I was pretty sure my IP was being blacklisted (since I cleared cookies a few times, so it wasn't that) and the site was just reporting every submit as "wrong captcha" to confuse spammers.

i eventually switched from Chrome to Safari and I seemed to have better luck -- but of course, that might have just been luck alone, or perhaps I really was unblacklisted or something.

(I also had a very early success on the "lost password" screen, and it said it was sending, but the email never arrived. Yes, I checked my spam box etc.)

Just thought I'd report this. Maybe it was just a string of really bad luck, or maybe something was broken. It might be worth trying it out yourselves a few times in case it's the latter.

Edit: Ah, and I did finally receive the original password reset email -- after a 7-hour delay.

On a similar note, what's the point of having a Contact page when you obviously just don't want to hear from anyone?

I can read the characters fine, I KNOW I was putting the right letters in, "suspected hacking attempt" every time!

Just remove the Contact page instead of wasting our time...

I agree. I received a rather "indifferent" response to my request. I'd (prior to my inquiry about Captcha) previously inquired about the "stay signed in" box which NEVER works for me. My inquiry was negatively "generalized" by comments about "cookies", etc. I would imagine most of the nexus users are experienced with a computer and KNOW when "functionality" is missing or at best inconsistent.

The responses that I've received were never what I'd expected to receive from the nexus forum. So...I agree. get rid of the contact page. It is quite obvious that nobody, on the other end of the contacts, gives a rip.

Captcha is terrible, inconsistent, fraught with poor representations of the challenge environments. It's just BAD.

Glad you got it sorted. We did have a problem without our login system for a few hours yesterday so that may have been related.

@lordquilton: We've had a look through both the support ticket history and email history for the last few months and I can't see any contact attempts from you. If you do have queries, you can contact us via the form or you may get a slightly faster reply from [email protected]

@fecaltwigs: I looked into your case and your ticket did get a response within 8 hours, but it was something of a canned response (we get a lot of tickets/emails about the same thing so we use templates to reply sometimes) so apologies if you felt it was a little blunt. You'll be pleased to know the problem you reported was actually fixed 3-4 days after your ticket was closed and it was reports such as the one you sent that helped us identify a problem. We generally will offer the current best solution for problems that are reported frequently. In the case of staying logged in, a lot of users who ask us about that don't allow cookies. I hope this helps to clear it up and as always if you need help; drop me a PM, email us at [email protected] or send another ticket in.
