deu58
Another quick question but i'm not entirely sure if this the right forum. Would you guys reccomend Fallout 3 or Fallout: NV on the PC if you had to pick one? Again I find myself in agreement with North Wolf. They are both great games and I do have them both with all the available DLC's for both. I can't really say I like one more than the the other. They are both a lot of fun and the extremely large number of mods available for both really makes each game extremely changeable for the user. Blackboltz
Couple more questions. How do I download the mods exactly? Just go to the thing that says browse categories on the main page, find the mod, and then click something that says download? Is it simple like that? How long does it take to restart the game if it crashes? And also if a mod has been patched or updated (for ex. wasteland defense) then is there just that one mod and not a bunch of different versions of it? And how do I use a mod once I install it? Is there a specfic G.E.C.K. I need and where would I find it? Also what exactly is this steam thing everyone keeps talking about? I'm sorry for all the questions but I just like to know what i'm getting into before I put money down. Edited June 18, 2011 by Blackboltz
NorthWolf
Downloading the mods from here is pretty simple. The most complicated it gets is a FOMOD file, which actually have been the easiest for me to work with since I started using the FOMM. If you're confused as to what that is, it's a mod manager to make your life easier when installing mods; I think someone detailed it earlier. It's easy to use if you follow its instructions. But, yes, the specifics to downloading mods from here is to go to the "Files" tab of the mod's specific page and download the files you were told to in the description of the mod. Restarting depends on your computer more than anything else. With several large content mods (increases load times) I still can get back into the game after a crash-to-desktop in about 30 seconds to a minute depending on my background tasks. Mods are just physical files, and their design is entirely in the hands of their author. There's no nice patching system like FNV itself has -- you need to download the files and extract them manually. Mods can be enabled VIA the Data Files button on your splash menu for the game, or more cleanly through a mod manager like FOMM. I highly recommend you use FOMM, it will delay your gameplay by 30 minutes tops but make it a lot easier to manage your mods. Steam is basically an application released by Valve that acts as a "gaming hub" of sorts. When you first buy the game you will need to make a Steam account. Opinions about Steam vary. Some people think Steam is nothing more than a DRM application with fluff, though I tend to disagree with that sentiment. It basically hosts a virtual marketplace, a built-in friends list with in-game features to allow you to chat with your Steam buddies (even in single-player games), and if you ever get a new computer and have lost all your Steam games, you can install Steam and download them all again for free. However, yes, it does act as a DRM device as well and you will need to connect to the internet at least once with Steam in order to play FNV; afterwards you can always use Steam in offline mode if you hate it. If you don't hate it, check out their marketplace -- they actually give extremely good deals on games periodically (i.e. they were selling L4D2 at $5.99 a year ago, which was about a 70% discount). Blackboltz
Where would I find the FOMM? And so when I install the game after buying it, it will make me set up a steam account? Then what?
NorthWolf
It's on this site. Search for "FOMM" and it should pop right up. You make a Steam account and register your game on Steam. Steam will then download patches for your game, and that's about it.
TehBuddha
Id also recommend not installing steam in program files, windows doesnt like you editing files in there, and nine times out of ten, it wont let you.

And if so is there a specfic location you would reccomend. And it would be safe buying the game off of Ebay or Amazon (assuming its from a reputable dealer) right? Just a PC version of the game. TehBuddha
Anywhere apart from program files is good. C:\Games\Steam is pretty much the norm I think. And Im pretty sure its fine to buy it from either of the sites you mentioned.
Blackboltz
Should I download the FOMM before I get the game or once I have the game in my computer?
tunaisafish
A new top level folder on one of your (non-removable) drives.
