What's the appeal of weapons?

What are the appeals for ppl to download and prefer certain weapons?

I used to download all the new weapons to try for fun. But after the novelty of having a said weapon, it gets old fast.

I have 2 kinds of weapons: the kind I use and the kind to give settlers and companions. Naturally, personal weapons have to look decent in 1st person (also doesn't take up a lot of screen space), has fast reload option, and decent selection of upgrades (for VATs and FPS mode).

Companion weapons don't really care about range, recoil, VATs etc... So they gotta look good I guess. Laser sight is a huge plus. It looks amazing in game, and kind off tell you where your companions are shooting at (or if they are even near you).

So here are a few of my favorite weapons:

- Assault rifle: vanilla, fast reload animation (skip the pulling handle, not sure if intended or glitch). Looks very cool, either WW2 or even Steampunk look. Kinda taking up a lot of screen space in FPS perspective and generally a big weapon (if your character needs something like an SMG then this is bad).

- Combat rifle: totally a companion/settler weapon. I have a mod to add bipod and this curve magazine that goes from the top. The magazine blocks a lot of screen estate in 1st person, so it's not so good. But for settlers, this looks amazing for a big guy charging with a huge machine gun.

- MAC-11 machine pistol. I love weapons from this creator mainly for the LAM. This one has a cool green laser beam. Can use .38 (the kind lame pipe weapons use) so a huge plus. The extended stock allows you to pick this weapon to be a pistol or a rifle (at work bench, not real time) so this is very versatile, especially if you are a sniper with rifleman perk who needs a small sized backup weapon (cosmetic, really).

-LK05, same creator as MAC-11, only automatic mode, and has only 25 magazine size (easy fix with FO4Edit). Has cool Red laser beam, and looks extremely cool. This is my go to weapons for companion and settlers (the commando ones, who guard and wear cool armies, not the farmers and shopkeepers). Terrible in VAT. It naturally takes up a lot of AP that I can queue up some 6 shots only (while other weapons can go up to 10-15 shots). This is the only weapon I know that the weapon flashlight works for companion, if you really want that.

- M2214- basically iconic M16 look. No fast reload option :( but otherwise my favorite close-combat all purpose weapon: very low recoil, super low profile in FPS (1st person view). The aim in reflex sight takes the least screen estate. And if I switch stock to pistol grip (basically no stock), along with the shortest barrel it looks like a super compact weapon. Even better than MP5. Also one of the best VATs weapon: I can queue up to 13 shots with my max VATs outfit.

- R91. It was the only weapon with laser beam until MaC-11 came out. The beam looks thick and not as bright. It looks like a classic battle rifle than a modern rifle. But I find new love for it with the ability to select all kind of ammo from work bench. And it looks decent in first person either. So I just replaced the M2214 with R91 as my all purpose weapon. Not as good in VATs, but decent enough for both VATs and FPS play mode.

- Deliverer. Very good starting weapon. I would love one in real life. But since FO4 makes no difference if you carry a tiny handgun vs a gigantic assault rifle, the low magazine count really hurts this weapon. It looks super cool of you decide to play James Bond in full Tuxedo. But it's all roleplay and aesthetic.

I tried a good range of weapons from G67 (was ok for a while) and a few variations of AK, and a load of hand pistols. After a while they kinda feel the same. Pistols in FO4 has no benefit like real life (lighter, easier to conceal, etc...). So the general appeal is lost to me.

I will get more until pistol when I start my City Hunter character who is like a detective and mostly exclusively carry handguns. Then it will go all out on handgun, .44, Deliverer, a scoped handgun for sniping (MAC-11 is excellent for that)

Any input welcome. Please suggest me some other weapons too. I am quite heavy on the role play element too. So far non of my character is heavy gunner, so I found no appeal in big guns (maybe only for Strong).
