Mouse Selection not working in menus

So when I start up New Vegas, I can use my mouse to load up my save and that is pretty much it. You know when you hover your mouse over, say, a gun in your inventory, or a dialogue choice, etc etc. The choice highlights with a box around it, and you can then make your selection with a left click. When I am in a menu, I get no such highlighting and I cannot use my mouse to select an item. Therefore, I cannot navigate any menus using my mouse. While I can manage using the arrow keys to navigate dialogue and the pipboy, the trading screen is non functional using the arrow keys. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? This only started today and I have added no new mods before or since this issue has begun.

* Simply open the console and type "EnablePlayerControls" (no quotes).

* Check that you do not have the "gamepad controller" activated in the "Game Settings" menu.

* If you have a controller attached, try unplugging it.

* Reboot your computer if you haven't in a while. You may need to "power cycle" (power off, wait 30 seconds and then power on).

* There are reports from the middle of last year that Windows 10 (after an update) has problems with some mice that have drivers not sufficiently "vanilla" enough compared to MS USB mice (Logitech in particular). The game seems to be sensitive to this. An update to the OS or video, sound, or mouse drivers might have caused this to happen again.

* Someone reported that this is 100% repeatable for those having the problem:

Step 1: Open your Pip Boy
Step 2: Go to World/Local Map
Step 3: Put your mouse off the map
Step 4: Close Pip Boy

Presto, you are now bugged and cannot select any menu options.

How to fix:

Step 1: Open your Pip Boy
Step 2: Put your mouse on the map
Step 3: Close your Pip Boy

And you're unbugged again.

* Try renaming/deleting your "C:\Users\<youraccountname>\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV" folder "Fallout" and "FalloutPrefs" INI files and let the game rebuild them. You will then have to reapply any tweaks you made to them, which is why I suggest renaming them so you have copies to reference.

* "Verify files" in Steam. (This will always report at least one file restored.)

If all the above fails, try Googling "mouse menu selection".

Hi all - just to add to this forum as I also had this problem recently and nothing appeared to permanently fix it from all the googling I did. I am running Windows 10 so I'm sure the problem is somewhat related (but I can't be sure)

I did find that this problem happened after fast travelling and I could temporarily fix the problem by opening my pip boy and leaving the mouse cursor on the map when closing it, but the results were still somewhat mixed (eg, if I aimed and fired it would only fire ever so often) and the problem would come back again just after fast travelling.

However... I found a permanent solution (for me at least). I use a Logitech mouse so I downloaded the Logitech Setpoint application from their site. There are options in there for games which I ticked and the problem has gone away. I've tried to re-create it but can't.

So if you have Windows 10 and a Logitech mouse and have this problem, try downloading the setpoint software, setting the mouse/game settings in there and see if that solves the problem?

Cheers

The game is six years old and the latest version of Windows it was designed for was Vista. Then there are all the various models of mice, trackballs, etc. A lot has changed since then, so no, there is not going to be a single permanent fix.

What, exactly, is your situation? How is it different from the original poster's? What make and model is your mouse? What UI altering mods have you installed? Which version of Windows are you running? Details matter.

I am using a logitech m100 mouse. I tried what Hawk said but it wont work

I tried renaming the ini files but no luck.

I tried reinstalling new vegas a couple of times but the problem keeps coming back after a few days.

Is there a permanent fix to this problem yet?? I tried what u said , but sometimes i forgot to do it, so when i bring up my companion command menu. I need to load my last save. Did anyone create a mod to fix this??? I stopped playing because of this annoying problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have to conclude that you're running Windows 10. Did you update your Setpoint software when you upgraded or installed Win10? The latest version is "6.67.83" from Sep 2015. Be sure to reboot your system after you update.

The "temporary" solution is related to moving your mouse off the Pip-boy map. If you do so, it will cause the problem to reappear. There is no fix for that, except to pay attention and not do it. When it happens, try moving the mouse back within the world map and then click on one of the other Pip-boy tabs.

Rebooting your system sometimes resolves it.

If you have a console type game controller attached, try unplugging it. In that instance:

  • In the game's Main Menu, select "Settings" and then "Key Mappings".
  • In the bottom right corner click on "Device" and change it from "controller" to "keyboard/mouse". ** Then exit the game and restart it from the vanilla launcher. (This is necessary so it will update the hardware settings in your INI files.)
  • In the "C:\Users\<YourAccountName>\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\Fallout_Prefs.INI" file look for "bGamePadRumble=" and ensure it is set to "0".

If none of the above helps, please post your LO (in "Spoiler" tags. Use the "Special BBCode" button in the "Reply" menu bar). [LOOT] can copy your LO into a file suitable for posting here. (It's under the ":" with three dots to the extreme right in it's menu bar.) That's so I can check if you have any UI mods installed. (Installing them in the wrong order can cause interface problems.)

Back when I used logitech mice I had this same issue. The solution for me was to uninstall all the software and drivers that came with the mouse, and then installed a bare bones driver from microsoft with update.

I still do this actually with my razer mouse too because their bloatware makes the mouse not work correctly. I lose the features of the software but that's a fair trade to have a mouse that works properly.
