are warranties worth it?

Recommended Posts

ya everything comes with a 1-3 year warranty. i just didnt know if the newegg warranty extended on this or added something extra for that first year. maybe ill just get rid of them all. no need for them. from what i see, the ones i would wanna warranty already have a 2 or 3 year warranty.

Usually extended warranties are handled by a third party. They are more like an insurance policy than a real warranty. And many are prorated based on how long it has been since you bought the item (not started using it) Most of the time, as long as you get a reasonable 1 - 3 year manufacturers warranty that should be sufficient. Places like Best Buy, Tiger New Egg etc. push those extended warranties hard - because they may make more money on the extended warranty than the item itself.

Components can always be replaced - Often Data cannot. :pinch: so back up, then back up the back up.

The best warranty on your data is a full mirror back up. You don't get any money back, or if the HD is out of warranty a replacement, but you do get your data back immediately instead of sending it off to be evaluated and waiting 6 weeks for a replacement. Just swap your mirror drive and working drive - then be sure to get a NEW replacement drive ASAP to replace the mirror.

The only negative to a mirror is that if your working drive picks up a virus, the mirror will automatically get it also.

So, for a true fail-safe - add a third drive that is only mirrored when you know it's safe and not automatically.
