The freeze of ye olden curses

Recommended Posts

hey everyone, I bought Elder scrolls: oblivion Gotye awhile back and I could never get very far in it without all of my controls/mouse freezing up.

I downloaded the unofficial patcher, the official patches, and i've uninstalled and reinstalled more times than i can count

The furthes i've gotten was about 45 minutes until my controls/mouse freeze up and I have to open task manager to close the program

honestly, the 45 minutes i did get to play it I had a blast. I'd really love just to be able to play the game

any help you guys may have to offer would be appreciated. thanks

Oblivion is a highly unstable program and crashes for everyone. Save often. If you played for 45 minutes without a crash, you are doing fine. Just restart the program, load your savegame, and carry on.

Some ideas:

(1) Forget about reinstalling. That is not your problem and it will not help. People go all crazy over reinstalling and it almost never does any good. In order for it to help, you must have one of those very specific and unusual problems where your game is corrupt. Usually people just have mod problems and hardware problems.

(2) Buy the most powerful computer and best graphics card you can afford. Oblivion will still make that awesome computer seem slow and weak.

(3) Turn your game settings way down.

(4) Remove most or all of your mods.

(5) Do basic maintenance of your computer such as disk cleanup, scan-disk, and defrag.

(6) Turn off as many background processes as possible before loading Oblivion.

(7) Disconnect from the Internet while playing Oblivion. Make sure that no background processes will start running while you are playing, like a program hooking to the Internet to check for updates, a virus checker performing a scan, or an auto defrag occurring.

No disrespect but I really think that exaggerates the situation and only serves to discourage Heartwielder -- it certainly hasn't been my experience anyhow. I can generally play for hours, and I can't recall the last time the game crashed or froze (I recently had frame-skipping issues that were resolved by switching from Catalyst to Omega drivers, but that's by-the-way).

The best thing for the OP to do would be to post their PC specs (OS, CPU, video card, memory etc.) and a mod list. This info might give some clue as to where the problem lies in this specific case.

One fix that can be done right away is to disable autosave options (if you haven't already); that is a known crash-cause; see the following link for how to do it (part-way down the page)...

Also, have a look at the Oblivion Tweakguide for further help...
