I am using Oblivion Mod Manager, and have been experimenting with a few mods (Gore mods and weapons/armor mostly) and when I load and activate them, it goes fine, but when I start up oblivion, in data files the mods don't even appear. and yes, my manager is in the direct area of Oblivion.

What is your OS, and where did you install the game?

My operating system is windows 7 (64 bit)

I heard there were issues with installing it in the program files area so I decided to install it simply on my desktop.

If that's not a good place to put it let me know, I can easily re-install it.

Are you sure you are installing the mods into the data folder and not either a data folder inside the data folder (Oblivion\data\data ) or directly into the \Oblivion folder instead of the data folder?

Also, are you unzipping the mod before installing? All mods are uploaded in a compressed format and must be unzipped before installing. If you need help with this let us know.

The desktop is not a good idea as that will slow down starting up the computer considerably (not playing though) The more programs you install to the desktop the more time it will take to start up. Even too many shortcuts can cause a slowdown in starting. Although a shortcut will not use nearly as much resources as the entire game there.

Currently I recommend installing all games outside of the program files folders, I use C:\Games\game name that way each game is isolated in it's own folder so Oblivion is installed to C:\Games\Oblivion

Moving the game is not recommended as it is not all in the same place and sometimes some of the Windows registry entries get confused.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.
