Unable to start a new game

Ok I have been playing Oblivion since it first came out (6?) years ago. Anywho, i recently built myself a new PC and got myself the GOTY version of Oblivion since my old one was rather beat up. I went ahead and installed it, then went ahead and installed my favorite mods. The very same mods that I have always used and never had any issues with. The game starts just fine, but when i click on the "New Game" option and select "yes" when prompted, it simply goes back to the main menu as if i said "no". I have the game set to run as admin and in xp mode (i'm running win7 64-bit) I have already uninstalled it once before along with all the mods and cleaned my registry, then reinstalled everything again, but still the problem persists. as I said before, Im using the same mods that i have always used before and never had problems before now, so unless i'm mistaken it's not an issue with my mods. Did you start the game with no mods first? This allows the ini to set things up based on your new machine. Some mods (very few) actually make changes to the ini and if you happen to have one of those it could cause problems when it tries to make changes before the base ini is created. Streamline is one I remember that makes changes to the ini.

You could try deleting the Oblivion.ini (the one in the folder with your saved games) The next time you start, it will automatically create a new one based on the hardware it finds on your computer.

Did you copy the original Oblivion.ini over from your old system? Not a good idea as much of the ini is based on the hardware which is now different. If you do want to use the same ini settings, you will have to manually make those changes as copying will cause it to try to use the settings based on the old machine.

Have you installed the Shivering Isles part of the GOTY? The latest patch is part of the SI install and not on the Oblivion part of the GOTY. If you don't want SI to run when you first start, then deactivate the Shivering Isles.esp - but leave it in.

Another idea, Can you new system run the game? Not all new systems can, especially some laptops.

Using the computer you plan to play the game on

Go here to see if your computer can run the game

I did not use the old ini file since I knew that would cause problems. I actually just deleted the new one, since I knew that when I started up Oblivion it would create a new ini anyways, but that still didn't work. And Yes i did install SI as well, especially since several of the mods I use need SI to work. But to answer your other question, No i did not try starting the game without any mods first. I will try that right now, I'm just hoping that I won't have uninstall all the mods , then re-install them again cuz that is such a pain in the ass. Would simply deactivating all of them work?

Ok so i just deactivated ALL of the mods. Game actually lets me start a new file yet as soon as the load screen disappears and the intro cinematic starts, the game crashes to desktop, with no pop ups or anything. its literally as soon as the loading bar fills up, it drops to my desktop. I guess I'm gonna have to just get rid of everything and start from scratch.

Yes my PC can run this game. The ONLY issue when using the system requirements test on that particular website, is that for the OS section I get a ? mark. Since this game came out long before Windows 7, it's obviously not officially supported, hence the reason why I run it in both XP mode and as Admin, as I stated before. If I use no mods at all then the game works just fine, with no hassles.

This is what I'm using in my PC

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Processor @ 3.1 GHz

6GB DDR2 800 MHz RAM

Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 Black Edition

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

So as far as requirements go, I think it's safe to say that my PC far surpasses what the this game needs to run. Sorry if I seem to be coming off as an ass, this is just really frustrating

Just disabling all of the mods does not remove them. All of the meshes and textures are still loaded. It's possible that a stray mesh or texture is causing a problem. Try this troubleshooting trick:

Bben's Oblivion Revert to Vanilla game
