Sniper Problems

I love FO3. However, the one problem I have is that the sniper rifles do not seem to shoot straight at longer ranges. I mean it is kind of cool because I have to compensate like in real life, but unlike real life I have to aim lower instead of higher.

Is there anyway to fix this? I have looked and several people have had the same problem, but I can't find a solution that works.

Thanks

EDIT: I should have been more specific. I am talking outside of VATS.

Gun 100% condition

Gun Skill 100

Target is standing completely still

I lowered the guns spread to 0 in the geck.

How long of a range are you talking about? I've noticed that I get 0% chance on most targets from more than a few hundred yards.

I've taken the Sniper perk which seems to help on headshots at closer though.

But the system is a bit weird the way it sometimes just shoots way off even if you have like 75% chance.

I use vats most times but sometimes seem to get lucky without it.

Everything is based on skills, this isn't a shooter, its a role playing game. To increase your accuracy raise your small guns skill up (at 100 your scope won't even move).

You can also crouch to increase acuaracy as well, and there is a perk called sniper that raises the head shot chance in vats.

Make sure your rifle is in good condition as well.

I am not talking about in VATS.

My skill is 100%.

100% condition on the gun, and I also went into the GECK and changed the guns spread etc to 0.

The problem is that when I aim outside of VATS, I am for the head and I miss. I mean the target is literally standing still, facing me, and has not helmet.

I take my time, aim carefully and fire and miss high. I assume I am missing high because the target does not notice and I remain hidden.

Also this is out in the open.

If I had to put a number to the range of the shot, I would say anything between 50-60% of the guns max range is a coin flip while anything over that I have to aim at the chest or stomach to get a head shot.

NOTE: I have noticed this is not only a problem for me in getting head shots. If I aim for the arm I have to aim at the knees and over slightly so I am aiming below the arm.

This is most likely caused by the fact that the game has a "feature" called "auto-aim" This means that, for example, when you try shooting someone who's standing behind a low object so that only his head is visible, you still "miss". Why? Because the game tries to compensate for you and direct the bullet to his torso at all times. (all outside of VATS of course)

So, you essentially need something to disable the "auto-aim": http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5606

Good luck!

Actually, that isn't the issue, Black. the problem is in Fallout 3 bullets aren't created at the end of your weapon (the node placed in nifskope) or even at the weapon's origin, they are in fact created lower than that. To correct for this the game's auto-aim selects a flat trajectory several degrees off from the horizontal (always the same angle, btw). At close range this works, the bullet and your line of fire are pretty close together and you don't notice. However, at very long or very short range, the bullet will in fact be displaced vertically from the line of fire you perceive, which is the reason firing over low cover is annoying at times, and sniper rifles miss at ranges too long for the auto-aim.

That file might help, but only if it sets the auto-aims max range to something very high, then stops it from otherwise affecting the path of shots fired.

Yes, I know. Well, that mod does in fact not really disable the auto aim. It just tweaks it.

Lets see; According to the description, the auto aim max range is increased to 50,000 (700 meters). So, will it help? I think so.

Well, otherwise just look at the mod's description. The author explained it much better then I could possibly do.

Yes, I admit it will help. In fact I use it myself (when I have FO3 installed). But the issue he's referring too is [slightly] different to the 'dumb autoaim makes you shoot a wall' one and I just thought he might be interested in the specific flaw he is encountering rather than 'autoaim's broke'. That said your description of the other issues with the autoaim is perfectly fine.

Darn, you're right. Good to see at least someone's paying attention.

Thank you guys for the answers. I will get that file downloaded. Would it also help if I change the max range of my gun in the geck? Granted some may consider that cheating but the way I look at it, what decent sniper rifle can't hit a target accurately at 500-700 yards.
