graphics card

Recommended Posts

so im looking at graphics cards and just trying to figure out what the next best graphics card is. this is the one i have picked out:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127578

whats the very next step up.

the four things i noticed are:

Core Clock

Shader Clock

Effective Memory Clock

Stream Processors

what are these things. is it the higher the number the better? cause ive noticed a couple of GPUs with very high Stream Processors but lower in the others

thanks for your help guys :)

if your looking at a 560ti its counterpart is the HD 6950. the step up is of course the 570.

i think the 560 is arguably better then the 6950. both seem to benchmark very close to each other usually within 1-4 fps. what i think makes the 560 better IMO other then its usually cheaper then the 6950 by 20-30 dollars is that you can overclock the hell out of the 560ti. they run stable at 1000MHz. the MSi you linked comes at 950MHz at that speed its better then 6950's for the most part. they also run colder.

the best overclock ive seen in a 6950 is this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161381&cm_re=hd_6950_2gb-_-14-161-381-_-Product running at 880MHz at 300 dollars its more then the MSi 560

one thing the 6950 has over the 560 is memory. its double the 560ti. so if gonna run dual monitors the 6950 is the way to go.

also dont waste your time with the 1gb 6950. you're better off getting the 560ti.

also what are those four terms i listed? what are each one talking about?

thanks hector youve been a constant help!

as far as i understand

Stream Processors is the actual GPU. so you really dont have to worry about this as it wont change from different makes. i.e. an ASUS 560ti will have the same stream/core processors as MSi or EVGA 560ti

the Core Clock and Shader Clock is how fast the GPU is running at. more = better. i know in the MSI cards core and shader are locked together to if overclock core you overclock shader too.

Memory Clock is again the speed of which memory is running at. usually is left alone since increasing it really doesnt improve performance much if anything.

cool so the listed card (the one that i have a combo for) is just as good as the Hawk, the difference is very small, i doubt its even noticeable. thanks for your help

being new to PCs i really dont wanna try something that could possibly ruin my Card. im not a dedicated PC gamer yet anyways, so its not about having the best of the best, its just about getting my moneys worth and not regretting something later, and making it easy to update when i do get into PC gaming more :) Edited by hoofhearted4

these are the two graphics cards im comparing. are they essentially the same thing?

are there any glaringly obvious things that make one better then the other?

EVGA:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130610

MSI:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127565

both are a good price (not looking to go any more expensive unless there is an obvious/reasonable choice) both come with rebates which is nice. leaning towards the MSI only because my board is MSI.

any thoughts?
