Best Mods?

And.... it is so NOT coming together. I got Wrye Mash Installed with no problems. But after reading their Help section half the morning and then searching on the internet for any questions/explanations on how to use it I still can't figure it out. It is just over my head. The help section assumes that I know things that I do not know.

My apologies--I should have warned you about the help section for Wrye Mash. It assumes a level of knowledge approximately equal to that you want to learn, which really doesn't do much good.

I am supposed to change load order by changing time and date- Is the latest time/date the mods that load last? Do I just go down through there making up times and dates and they change everything?

The oldest date/time stamp loads first. The latest date/time stamp loads last. If two mods affect the same thing, the latest one has the final say. I suggest putting the Merged Lists.esp last.

What mods should load first/middle/last?

See what each modder recommends, but in general ,I do the following:

I put companions towards the latest end of my list. And you t want to avoid changing that position in the order, because they might lose track of any quests, conversations, etc, that are in progress.

I put change-al mods, such as sound enhancements, stat re-balancing, new armor/weapons systems, affect-everything stuff towards the beginning.

If two mods have a patch required to load for compatibility, I load those two mods close together, with the patch right afterwards. Just because it makes things easy to find.

Mlox will give you good advice, in general, about placement. See what it says, and ask here if you have any questions. :)

What in the crap am I supposed to do about the ones with the yellow boxes?

Yellow where? Under the Mods tab, the Saves tab, or the Installer tab? If it's under the Mods tab, highlight the ESM/ESP on the right that's in yellow, right-click, and tell me what options it provides you.

What do I do about mods that are installed that I didn't like and don't ever plan to use again?

Uncheck the box, and delete the mod (unless you've installed it using BAIN). Then go to the Save tab, highlight the saved game, and go through the suggestions I posted earlier--clicking on the bottom right box, clicking the button Save under it, right click the saved game, and choose Repair All.

I'm assuming you ran Morrowind Code Patch, already, and made your choices. That will also help prevent any corruption from changing mods in mid-stream. Wish we'd several years back, when my saved games ended up with all sorts of errors!

The "Getting Started" section doesn't even make sense to me. I read and re-read it. I thought I was of average technological ability until today. I need a step by step instruction guide- that assumes I know NOTHING.

I think it's designed to prove you really, really want to play Morrowind, and chases away people who can't and shouldn't, sending them adrift in a sea that ultimately docks at Mario Bros.

Thanks for all the help. And if you can help me at all with Wrye Mash- like point me to a "Wrye Mash for Dummies" page, I would be eternally grateful! :teehee:

I've seen something like that for Wrye Bash, but not for Wrye Mash, unfortunately. Perhaps someone can correct on this--but in any case, feel free to ask. :)

Thanks. All this is going to be helpful. I got frustrated and did a clean reinstall. The good news is that it seems to have worked. The bad is that I still cannot run the Morrowind Code Patch. I was hoping that a complete uninstall and reinstall would fix that problem but it did not. I get the same message.

At least now I am working with one mod on Wrye. One mod doesn't seem nearly so bad. ;)

What's the problem with the MCP?

Here's how I install it: I place the MCPATCH folder under the Morrowind directory. The DATA FILES is also dragged onto the Morrowind directory. (It doesn't overwrite the content of the DATA FILES already there, as I suspect you know. It just adds to them.) And I put the Morrowind Code Patch.exe in the Morrowind directory. Then I run the patch.

It's an excellent tool, so hopefully, you can get it going. I'm glad the other stuff is working for you!

Problem: I can't add Morrowind Code Patch. I get the following message.

Analyzing Morrowind.exe...

Backing up Morrowind.exe to Morrowind.Original.exe

There is no compatible patch for your version of Morrowind.exe. Make sure your Morrowind is patched with the last Bloodmoon patch (v.1.6.0.1820). MCP is not compatible with the Impulse download version due to the DRM wrapper around the game program. If you should have a compatible version, please check you have not installed other patches such as Exe Optimizer, 4GB patch or no-CD patches. Check the readme for more details.

Patch failed to apply.

I have the 4GB Patch- I can't get Oblivion to run on my computer without it. I checked the Readme- It didn't address the 4GB Patch. Do I have to have this patch?

What to do???

It runs but gives me the message above. I've emailed him and reinstalled twice. I'm just not willing to give up my 4GB patch, which is most likely the problem. I haven't heard from the developer. Maybe there is a workaround.

Are you running the Impulse download version, as MCP seems to think? And what 4 GB patch are you referring to? Because if you aren't running the Impulse version, then the latest patch you would run is the Bloodmoon patch it refers to.

No I am running the 3 original discs bought separately. No other patches. These are the 1st discs that came out- not GOTY.

The 4GB patch is a patch several people on this forum suggested to help my poor old computer run Oblivion. As far as I know it only is applied to Oblivion. It is located in the Oblivion folder. Also I get a similar message if I try to apply the official patch. "Morrowind.exe not found. I don't get it. I have the original disc that came out...

I'm confused, then. If this is an Oblivion patch, it has nothing to do with Morrowind, and MCP won't see it, since it only sees what's in the Morrowind folder. If you've got the original game and its two add-ons, you only need to get the Bloodmoon patch, then apply MCP. :)

Okay you were right! I added that Bloodmoon Patch (that I thought I'd tried to add before), and they both patched just fine.

Thanks again!!!

Glad to help. :)

One other modder whose work I use a lot is Danae. That's especially true of Staff Agency, which lets you hire a wide range of NPCs to do a variety of tasks (with quests, to improve output); also Hold It!, to provide various NPCs with appropriate objects in hand for their profession. I especially enjoy her house mod, Pegasus Estate, which has a great deal of interactive content, detail, and storage, but it's in beta, and apparently withdrawn. (She's working on a bard mod at the moment.) The thread about it is here, If you ever want to check it out, let me know--I've got the beta, and I'm using it. It's absolutely solid, but lacks all the quests and NPC dialog as of yet. Still: library where you give books to a librarian, who stores them on shelves; two lord and ladies bedrooms, and a host of other bedrooms for companions; a lab where you can write spells, as well as auto-store and reclaim alchemy ingredients, etc.

Anyway, enjoy!

I might be.. where is the house located? I always use my Balmora house as a main- but I use others also- mostly just to display all the stuff that I won't sell.

Another problem- big one this time. Apparently my uninstall wasn't as good as I'd hoped. I've never done one since I installed Oblivion, and so I can't just delete "all Bethesda" everywhere like I did before. And as you've probably guessed- the registry stuff is over my head. I have used a cleaner to remove all Bethesda but that won't work running Oblivion.

Everything works fine except I can't put on Better Heads or any headpack compilation that includes Better Heads. I get a ton of error messages about missing meshes/textures and then if I click through them, the game crashes once I start looking through the heads. So far I've tried Beryls, Changing Faces, Westlys, and Better Heads (latest one). I KNOW there is still something there, because the guy on the boat in the very beginning--- he has a Better Head right after the clean install. Bah! :wallbash:

I'm going to post a separate thread about it though. I know when the problem happened. My game was running fine, and I started fooling around with Wrye Mash trying to figure it out and made my game unplayable. I had so many unused mods on there- no telling what I did. At the time, I think I was trying to get Westlys big headpack to work. I already had Better Heads and Beryls working fine...That's what I get for being greedy! Oh well- that's a whole new thread. Everything but the heads is working. :teehee:

I'll look into stuff by Danae too. Agencies= Seriously Cool! I already put on the mod with the scout service. Awesome!
