Archive Invalidation/Texture Replacement/Con-fus-ation.

Through my days of lurking here and there and everywhere about modding Oblivion/FO3 & F:VN, I'm painfully aware of how often this question might have been asked. XD Unfortunately for me; I've exhausted what leads I can find and I feel like I've done pretty good (aside from the evident miserable failures, and all), trying to get this to work on my lonesome.

So I'll cut to the chase and say,

Here's my problem: I'm currently trying to get at least ONE instance of this mod to work on -one- of the games I own in hopes that I'll learn how to do the other two, seeing as they're so similar. That said, I've followed multiple guides for each version on each game, and -none- of them have worked. The problem for me is that the only guides out there are A: Ancient, B: Tailored to a user who wants to do something slightly different with the mod than I (though the FO3 readme was probably the close I've gotten to getting it working. Except, it didn't. So lol.): wanna do. So basically, I'm trying to get the male body to work in FO3, and I'm very certain I replaced what I needed to replace as-per requested by the readme, but I'm still at square one, with nothing being changed in the actual game, not even an error or a glitch or a missing-anything.

So I'm figuring this has something to do with Archive Invalidation that I must be getting wonked, which is strange because I've read multiple threads about what it is, why it needs to happen, what it does and even why the game works like this.

So, what I've done: For FO3, I downloaded the .rar from the Nexus, extracted the files to my Fallout/data folder, went inside that and navigated to the Male_ thing, chose the .nif file (blindly as this wasn't well explained as to what the difference was between the numbered files was. I chose upperbody2.nif if it means a thing.) replaced the .nif after making a backup I could use to restore back to stock and moved on to the textures. so, then I basically did the same thing with my .dds(I think?) of choice and loaded up the game via FOMM, that is -after- I went into tools and selected "Archive Invalidation" which prompted me if I really wanted to do so, I said yes and booted it up. I hit 'continue' upon getting into the game, checked it out and nope, still the weird shirt and boxers.

So, after that failed, I decided to check my .ini file in the "My Games/Fallout3" section to make sure the game was allowing invalidation in the first place (FOMM should have doen this when it asked to change the readme, yes? Or maybe not? XD) and it was indeed set to =1. Back to square one, I prayed to the Google Gods and found a mod that runs a program that 'inputs a dummy .bsa textures file' and some stuff to keep you from having to archive invalidate when you put textures and such into the game. Oddtip: when this program booted, it was already "activated" so technically the archives were invalidated already? So I deactivated and reactivated.

Misc: I have FO3 GOTY edition, the whole sha-bang, and FOMM is fully updated (as far as I know, it asked to update when it went into FO3 mode for the first time) anddddd, yeah. That's all I can think of. XD

TL;DR,

I'm trying to get the body replacer to work, I followed the readme thoroughly and wound up with jack, looked at a bunch of sources to figure it out and decided I needed some legit experts to help. I think the problem is with Archive Invalidation, even though I've tried three methods of doing so and checked everything and it seems to be clear. I dunno what else to try, so I came here. I'm 75/80% sure I got the file-swapping right, but maybe not? XD I dunno.

So, any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated, I figured this would be an easy thing to get me started in the world of modding but yeahhh, lovin' where that got me. XD I'm a total modding nub, so I'm sure I'm missing some occult little crap.

Edit: And when I used the program, after activating/deactivating it still didn't work. XD Obviously, but I figured I'd mention. It didn't do anything at all, no errors no nothing.

So, you're trying to install Robert's male bodies?

First of: You said that you unpacked the .rar directly into the data folder? Personally I'd highly recommend against that. What I always do is unpack them in a separate folder (like the "downloads" folder), then have a look at it's contents to see what needs to be copied into the data folder.

Instead of trying to install a body replacer for which any and all support has long been gone however, why not give another body replacer a try instead? How about This one

If I recall correctly it is installed through FoMM, making it nearly impossible to screw up on installing it. Just give it a try.

Yeah. XD That actually was kind of a terrible writing error all around. z-z Reading back (I wrote it at 5AM on my cellphone, ftl. XD) What I -actually- meant was I thought I had posted in the wrong -section- of the forums. X: Fail-typing is fail. Sorry 'bout that. XD And as for the mods, thank you very much. O: I checked the new one and LOL that's some uhhh. Interesting textures he's got there. >.> But it's simple and is a major improvement over the vanilla bodies. =) I'll try this out and see what happens. :D

Thanks a lot for your help and apologies for the bad post earlier. XD I'll fix that to say what I meant.

It's OK. Apologies not needed but accepted anyway. Besides, these are your first posts here, so I can understand.

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay, it's been awhile but, to sum it up; one modding spree later, here I am. XD Having installed around seventy or so mods, I've run into a pretty strange one from what I've managed to find about it. Breezes is a hella slick, very professional mod and installation was literally fool-proof. XD If only all the other mods had been -this- simple. =) Anyways, I'm having an odd problem with it that really, is largely inconsequential. You don't even really see it, ever. But at any rate, here's my problem:

My PC and only my PC(not any raiders or any other NPC the textures and such got slapped on as well), his body is -all- messed up. XD Looks like bruises and wounds have gotten all transposed over his texture, some parts even go black(left foot, some others) and overall his skin color is...well. What color is cat vomit? =P LOL. Looks like the dude took a dip in some sewage. XD Anyways, raiders and everyone else are completely fine, just my character and I couldn't find anyone else having the same problem. So here I am. =)

Having installed basically a complete overhaul's worth of mods I'm fairly certain that this time, it is indeed -not-, Archive Invalidization. 8D Installed quite a few custom guns as well, and they work flawlessly just like the other mods. Honestly I feel pretty lucky to have so many mods working in concert with just some skin fungus cropping up. =P lol

Anyways, any help would be appreciated. =) Maybe I should reinstall it? .-. I'm positive this is the only body replacer/fiddling thing I have, so it couldn't be conflicts... My load order is maybe a little messy, but hey. XD Everything works. o-o So...

Okay, so. Now that I've spent some time playing the game; I'm definitely having some strange texture problems. Now all the male bodies are all messed up and super mutants (maybe other enemies?) randomly turn blue. .-. It flickers. Unsure of how to get rid of this. XD But, so far so good really. =) These are tiny problems I can likely ignore, but fixing them would be better. :)

Oh, I already thought I recognized this topic title from somewhere.

Eh, lets see: Could you post your load order? It would make troubleshooting this a lot easier. Also: do you have a female body replacer installed as well? And does that works like it should?

Also, Are you using a custom race for your Player character?
