Safe Ways to Download

I'm new to NVN and I'm worried about making sure my computer isn't downloading any malicious software.

Is there any Anti Virus Software that can check a file before you download it?

If you're meaning New Vegas Nexus, don't worry. Just be sure to look at a few things on a file first:

 

How new the file is and the uploader: If the uploader just joined today and has no past history

Have other people used it?: Other people talking about the file in non-virus speak is good

Images: Pictures of a file lend to its legitimacy

Filesize: An abnormally large file for what it should do is a flag

Exes: Very few files have to run a .exe to install. Unless it's a popular mod like NVSE, beware.

 

The Nexus is very good about keeping viruses away and banning their uploaders, but be sure to check those flags first.

Especially look at the number of posts a person has. If they have 1 or 0 posts and are uploading a mod, that is extremely suspicious. Read some of the comments to see what others are saying.

 

If you are worried about viruses and malware, stay away from torrent and pirate sites. The pirates love to put up fake games and mods for suckers to install their malware. The current biggie is the FAKE antivirus that will not go away until you pay them. DON'T pay. It's really a virus and a pain to get rid of as most standard AV programs cannot completely remove it - if they can run at all with the fake on your computer.
