Gaining XP for no apparent reason

So I'm wandering the streets of Boston doing various quests for a few factions that happened to take place in the same vicinity, fighting raiders, gunners, ghouls and what not. Every now and them I get the ding! and I get the xp gained notification - about 10+, 20+ at a time. I'm not in combat, I'm just walking the streets so I'm curious to know what is it that is giving me XP. Could it be a settlement that's currently under attack? Although I did not receive any notification that I need to defend any of them.

Just have to check, but are you sure that you haven't just discovered a new location? That would be the most obvious reason.

Alternatively, are you sneaking at the time? If so, it could be that you've successfully avoided detection - I think you get XP sometimes when you successfully sneak past certain sentries/guard posts, even if you're unaware of them.

any death due to explosions, fire hazards, indirectly caused damage (like poison or bleeds) or randomness count toward the players exp gain it seems because this happens to me too. so if some raiders and gunners are fighting and one of them throws a molotov, the enemies that die from the fire hazard are all free exp for you if your in the area. this happened to me in FO3 as well on somewhat rarer occasions.

If you have a trade line going between two places, you sometimes will get xp if your caravan is near by. If the caravan kills, you get XP from that kill. It weird me out one time till I started hearing gun fire. When I investigated it was because of a caravan from Hangman to the Castle
