Would appreciate some help finding certain kinds of mods

I've played Fallout 3 already a few times, but only on the 360. I pounced on the GOTY edition yesterday when Steam had it on sale, and I'm going to spice up my game this time with mods since I'm on PC.

I just think I'll need some help finding the right ones to use, and making sure I'm installing them right. What I'm looking for is basically anything that improves the experience without making it radically different from vanilla Fallout 3.

Better models for both characters and weapons (such as actual unique unique weapons), maybe some other new weapons that aren't overpowered, some sort of difficulty mod that will make the game more challenging but fair, any important bug fixes that official patches hadn't dealt with, anything that just improves the general look of the world.

Hopefully you get the idea. I feel like I'm forgetting some stuff. Thanks for any help you can give.

Edit: Oh, I already remembered things like animations and iron sights would be good. I've seen those, but I'm not sure what would be the best one.

Another good example of the kinds of mods I'm looking for is the Galaxy News Radio mod that adds 100 songs. That is the kind of improvement to the experience I'm looking for.

I'm only on my first play through but I like the Project Beauty mod and the enhanced sky mod.

If you've already played, maybe check out the Wanderers Edition, could be exactly what you need.

There is also the big texture overhaul.

Heh, I've also played a lot of New Vegas, so the stuff in the Wanderer's Edition mod there sounds pretty nice. I hope its survival aspects are handled better than NV did it.

I already knew of Project Beauty, but I wasn't sure if it was ever completed.

One other thing...how do I know if a mod is compatible with another or not?

The big overhauls like WE will have info about compatibility with other popular mods.

Or maybe the other way around for newer mods.

As far as I know, FOMM is necessary for anything over a few mods and there is another tool that allow you to merge and check compatibility in single .esm file.

Check the all time popular list in downloads, you can find all the tools that way.

Essential mods are:

FOOK2 > FallOut Overhaul Kit. Gives weapons REAL names instead of Ultra-Generic-Please-Don't-Sue-Us names, as well as improved textures across the board, makes followers less retarded and makes you have to give them ammo and a plethora of CUSTOMISABLE gameplay tweaks.

NMCs Textures > Install after other mods, but wow does this make a hell of a difference. Vanilla FO3 is utterly unplayable. Have a look at the images, you will not be disappointed.

MMM > Marts Mutant Mod. Considered one of THE best if not THE best mod ever made for Fallout 3. Now, I will admit, I have not personally used it so I cannot give my opinion, but I will be using it on my next playthough.

Fellout > Again, imo 100% Essential. Removes the hideous green tinting all over the place and makes Nights actually Dark (as you would expect in a freaking Post Apocalyptic world) and brutal.

Weapon Mod Kits > The mod so amazing they had to nick it for New Vegas. Nuf Said. :D

Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch > Does what it says on the Tin. The Broken Steel patch is bugged on Rivet City though, you'll need to patch it with this.

CASM > One Billion percent essential. Gamebryo has always had funky autosaves, but FO3's issues are REALLY bad. This replaces that entirely and fixes those issues.

DC interiors > As mentioned an outstanding mod.

You already mentioned "There is more where that came from." GNR mod which is another excellent mod. After that it really is a matter of personal taste. I personally have the HD Audio mod, a Quicker Entrance to Underworld mod, a high Quality Moon mod, an autoaim Fix mod, Level Cap remover, Faster Pipboy light and a Sprint Mod. I never did like Wanderers Edition myself, but each to their own. :)

Don't forget to get FOSE (FallOut Script Extended) and FOMM (Fallout Mod Manager), both of which are needed for most mods anyway!

Ok, I have a better video card now. I'm going to start downloading mods, but I have one more question: Do I need to do anything special for the Steam version? Or is the process for installing mods the same?

Oh wait! I knew I was forgetting something.

Okay. Mothership Zeta was a pain in the ass. I didn't enjoy it a whole lot. I can't remember every reason, but I seem to remember it being buggy, and it pissed me off that you had to kill everyone at the end to get their gear, and you couldn't even stay on the ship and explore it.

I know I saw a mod that opens up more of the ship, but is there an even better one that just makes the entire DLC way better than it originally was?

Actually, I'm not even ready to know those answers yet. Jeez, I keep moving on to the next step and thinking of more questions.

Okay. I'm having trouble deciding what to use and what not to.

See, Wanderer's Edition adds more weapons to the game...but so does the Fallout Overhaul Kit...according to the description, it actually adds "thousands" of items. I really don't think I need THAT many, and I also worry that there are bound to be some items that just don't fit in the game.

So, is there some way I can pick and choose what parts of these mods I want? When I put it all together, this seems like kind of a huge task, just to make sure I don't create a huge mess.

Try Mothership Zeta Crew

And Mothership Zeta Crew Addons for some nice extras and a way to shorten the original DLC.
