Would appreciate some help finding certain kinds of mods

See, Wanderer's Edition adds more weapons to the game...but so does the Fallout Overhaul Kit...according to the description, it actually adds "thousands" of items. I really don't think I need THAT many, and I also worry that there are bound to be some items that just don't fit in the game.

So, is there some way I can pick and choose what parts of these mods I want? When I put it all together, this seems like kind of a huge task, just to make sure I don't create a huge mess.

My personal recommendation would be to forget about FOOK and just get FWE instead.

Okay, what's the deal with FOIP? None of you told me to get it but from the description and endorsements, it seems pretty necessary.

I'm also not exactly clear on what it does. It looks like it puts different mods together for you or something, so that you don't have to worry about making sure their compatible...but it can't be that simple...

It is. They are patches intended to allow large popular mods to work together.

It wasn't mentioned explicitly since the mods themselves reference them often, but yeah, FOIP if you use those mods. :D

And FOOK actually makes the game more realistic. It stays within Lore and removes the silly generic names.

...so is it more realistic than FWE? How well do both of these mods work together?

Ugh, this is completely overwhelming. I think I need to install a mod first just to feel like I actually can do this. I don't have a game to load though...is there a quick way I can test to see that a mod is working?

Ok...I haven't had time to mess with this at all this week until now. I kind of forgot where I am/how much I understood of the process so...can someone help me get started? What's the first step after I've finished downloading all the mods I want?

I've stopped downloading mods, I already have a lot, mostly the big ones.

I've been progressing in installing them, but I have ZERO confidence in how correctly I'm doing this. There's just so many little things, I know I had to have messed up.

So, how exactly do I know if I messed up, or how could I know if the mods are working correctly, and, if I have to, how exactly would I go about starting over?

It's a good start your mods are working fluidly with one another if the game does not crash. Also you will usually see "strange" issues like animation or texture problems like 2 buildings on top of one another (had that happen once), haha.

Lot of the big popular mods, the modders will usually have a note in their description page if there are any incompatibility issues. Like I recently used RH ironsights and Fallout 3 reanimated together. Was getting quirky movements with my followers. Went back and re-read the description and sure enough the RH ironsights modder had on his description page it was not compatible with reanimated.

Beyond that, MOD ORDER IS VERY IMPORTANT. Use this to auto sort your mod order, does an amazing job. Probably one of the best utilities to have if you want to heavily mod your game and allow it to be just as stable as an unmodded vanilla version of Fallout3 http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10193

Well I finally just decided to stop being a chicken and tried to install the mods and put them in the right load order. I didn't expect to get it working right, but I just wanted to try something since I had already sort of created a mess.

Well...looks like I created a bigger mess. Fallout 3 won't even start. It boots up in windowed form, first pretty small, then almost full screen, then just closes.

So how do I clean this up? I've got no idea where to start.

Use Fallout Mod Manager, use the BOSS auto sort, then use FO3Edit to create a merged patch.

If it still crashes, disable the merged patch then disable mods one by one till the game starts to find the one that is breaking.
