Hi. I've been frequenting nexus for the past few weeks for New Vegas, and then Oblivion. Now I want to play Fallout 3 again cause it was awesome too :D

I got everything installed fine (I have DLCs and mods waiting to be added, but for now I just want to get the actual game working), and updated with the patch 1.7.

I run FalloutLauncher as Admin, it detects settings, I press play - screen goes black which it does for all games, for resolution changes, and then it goes back to desktop with "Fallout3 has stopped working, windows is checking for a solution to the problem."

Ok.

I run Fallout3.exe as admin, immediate crash, same message.

Ok.

I'm on Windows 7, quad core processor, ATI 4800 etc, so I change the ini for the quad core tweak with:

"bUseThreadedAI=1

iNumHWThreads=2"

Run FalloutLauncher as admin, play game, immediate crash, same message.

Change iNumHWThreads=2 to "=1". (so it only uses 1 core)

Run FalloutLauncher as admin, play game, immediate crash, same message.

So that's Fallout.ini, but I notice theres FalloutPrefs.ini as well. So I tried three variations:

Fallout.ini yes tweak, FalloutPrefs.ini no tweak.

Run FalloutLauncher as admin, play game, immediate crash, same message.

Fallout.ini no tweak, FalloutPrefs.ini yes tweak.

Run FalloutLauncher as admin, play game, immediate crash, same message.

Fallout.ini yes tweak, FalloutPrefs.ini yes tweak.

Run FalloutLauncher as admin, play game, immediate crash, same message.

Heard about some d3dx9 problem, copied my d3dx9 file into my fallout directory.

Run FalloutLauncher as admin, play game, immediate crash, same message.

Any help lol

What the f.

I unplug my 2nd monitor, run fallout not as admin, game runs fine.

Is there any way around unplugging my 2nd monitor? Kind of an interesting hard fix...

I suspect that's probably caused by the fact that when you plug in a second monitor, your graphics card has to work extra hard in order to display the game on both screens. Not sure if you can do much about that, barring buying a graphics card that can handle all the extra work or putting an extra graphics card in your rig (which should be exactly the same as your current one)

You could also try setting the windows resolution and Fo3 resolution the same. Then you can also use this: Fake Fullsreen Mode
