skywarder
Hi! I'm new to modding or to.. well.. using a constructions et at all! So I thought: "Hey, why not test Oblivion's Construction Set just for fun?". I thought that I'd start off with something that ain't too complicated either because I'm bad at stuff like this. Anyhow, I tried 'making an NPC playable', by following this guide: http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/How_To_Make_an_NPC_Playable It worked perfectly. But yesterday I thought I'd try again, allas creating another new game using another npc's face. Thought, I can no longer find "Player" anywhere in the NPC list. I should probably mention that I used a female dark elf face the first time I did this (but I've checked both Imperial Males AND Dark Elf Females for the player actor). Also, I've been thinking that it might be the file from my first successful attempt that is in the way so to say, so I thought I should delete it from my data folder. Thought, it is no longer there. It is present in both Data Files in the OblivionLauncher as well as in the Data list in the Construction Set, but the file is nowhere in the Data folder (thus making it impossible to remove, since it isn't there?). I named it "Player.esp", and I've been trying to search the whole computer using Windows Search, but no "Player.esp" is there. So basically: The file is gone from the Data folder in the Oblivion folder, as well as the "NPC actor" called 'player' in the construction set. Yet the file is present among the data-files when checking with the Launcher/Construct. Set, making it impossible for me to do a new game using an npc's face again. Does anyone have any idea how to fix any of this? It might just be me being stupid but I've been sitting here several hours trying to fix this! :P So I'm really grateful for help. Thanks in advance guys! Edited July 16, 2011 by skywarder
David Brasher
Try running a simpler search of your hard drive. Search for Oblivion rather than a small file associated with Oblivion. The computer would likely search the first links in the chain before searching things like sub-directories, sub-sub-directories and sub-sub-sub-directories. You may even be able to manually locate Oblivion quickly. Some common places to install Oblivion are locations like:C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\DataC:\Games\Oblivion\Data Try right-clicking on your desktop shortcut to Oblivion and reading the "properties" data for help on the file paths. If you install the CS and then move or reinstall Oblivion in a different place, the CS can lose connections with your mods, and the best thing to do is reinstall the CS. Oblivion should never be moved, just deleted and reinstalled to a new place. It sounds possible that you edited the name of "Player" in your mod. So it won't appear on the lists anymore when you look for it because it will be named something else. If you create a new mod or open a different mod in the CS, "Player" should be present on the lists as normal.
skywarder
It's not the very Oblivion folder I'm having trouble finding, it's the file in the Oblivion folder.I've tried searching in the Oblivion folder and in the Oblivion\Data folder but it can't find any results. D:And I hadn't either moved or even deleted anything associated with Oblivion. I tried to re-installing the CS, but yet the same thing happened. Tought, when I start the CS (without loading Oblivion.esm) "Player" shows up among NPcs in the CS. Thought it's wrong somehow. It doesn't have any IDs, and it doesn't have the default imperial face either. And when loading Oblivion.esm, this actor is not available. At least until I restart the CS, it shows up again but disappears when I load Oblivion.esm. Has my Player actor somehow drifted away from the Oblivion.esm master file..? [This might've happened before I re-installed the CS too, I don't know actually] I've tried loading EVERY mod I have for Oblivion which is about 30 different ones, yet there is no Player actor in ANY race menu. I even checked the other races too just to be sure xD
Natterforme
If the player file is showing up under your data files in the start menu, that means you have an esp file in your data files by the same name. Either delete it or uncheck it and start over. When working in the CS, always create new form ids of everything you work with, otherwise you will overwrite all items of the same name in the oblivion esm and you dont want that. Also, make sure you are selecting the oblivion esm master file AND the esp that you are working with(checking it as the active file) in order for any new/changed files to appear and be worked with again. If you do not check the esp as an active file, 1. no items made in that esp file will appear in the CS, fooling you into believing that is buried in there somewhere secret--and-- 2. you will not be able to save any new work to the esp file, thus forcing you to create a new esp for each session, which would be better off avoided Hope this helps^^.
skywarder
Yeah I know it's supposed to be in the Data folder (I've actually learned that  ) if it shows up in those menus, but it ain't there. That's the tricky part ;D Yes, I've been trying to load in different ways, trying: *Oblivion.esm ONLY, *Player.esp (I named this "mod" player - and the CS automatically loads ONLY his when starting up) and *Both Oblivion.esm and player.esp. I've tried these different ways with both the esp unactivated as well as activated in the launcher data files, yet there is no npc actor named player left in the CS, and the first file where I edited player isn't in the Oblivion\data folder, even thought it, like I said, shows up in both in the Launcher's data files and the Data menu in the CS. David Brasher
Do you have your file manager set up to display files of all types? If a file manager was set up wrong and looked at a directory full of .esps but was set to only look for .doc files, the directory would appear to be empty. skywarder
I don't know actually, but since it displays all my other eps' I guess I have xD Also,I succeeded to delete my "mod", thought nothing that helped really. I don't remember how I did, but I somehow went into file-browsing from the CS, and when I went to the Oblivion\Data-folder THROUGH the CS my modded esp was there (with a lock icon on it..?). Anyhow, I deleted it from there, but it's still the same.. every time I start up the CS a totally clean npc actor named "Player" shows up, where nothing is preset, totally empty and clean. And upon loading Oblivion.esm even the empty player actor disappears :S
