maboru
Basically most, if not all, of my Crash/Hang problems since 1.4 have been the result of my improper installation of fn4gb_nvse - http://nvse.silverlock.org/ - (seventh bullet point down under Troubleshooting / FAQ.) Prior to this release I used the fn4gb shortcut hook to NVSE and left that there after downloading the 'new' one. In my defense the installation instructions still simply state that you just have to install the .exe with the .dll in your "fallout new vegas" root directory (the one under SteamApps/common). However, the truth is you need to install the new source folder as well, not necessarily in the root directory but it is the most convenient way for me, the .exe and the .dll definitely have to be in the root directory. I only dropped the 'new' .exe and .dll in the root, ignoring, at my peril, the source folder which it turns out has some extra really important stuff not included in the original! So, for anyone else who may have done the same thing, simply - Extract fn4gb_nvse somewhere. Click on the fn4gb_nvse folder that is extracted and copy the "source" folder, fnv4gb.exe and the fnv4gb_helper.dll and paste them all into your root directory. Then... Right click the fnv4gb.exe, click create short cut, drag it to your desk top (use it to launch the game) and resume enjoying your game crash/hang free. [At least as crash/hang free as FONV gets! Of course this only applies to those of us using a 64 bit operating system.] Truth is,if I had taken the time to check out the entire file structure I wouldn't have had any problems. Even the companions aren't crashing me anymore (although they still do weird stuff like "waiting" in whatever new cell I move to sometimes). I hope this helps someone else but I'm prepared to put on the pointy hat and sit in the corner by myself now!
GothikaGeist
The "Dunce" Cap :D My fn4gb is OLD, and I have it running out of a folder I named "Fallout Mods" in my desktop xD Let me fix that... http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/whistling.gif Edited July 21, 2011 by GothikaGeist
Thasic
Pardon my ignorance, but which folder is the 'root' folder?
maboru
Gothika - You're running 32 bit right? Does it work for you, because there seem to be conflicting reports on that. The 3gb FN Enabler + is designed for 32 bit but their page says they are updating that for 1.4 and will release the new one when its ready. Thasic - Its a slight misnomer in this case. A root directory is technically the master directory like C:\Windows that contains all the Windows program folders. The actual root directory for FONV is the Fallout New Vegas directory that you installed the game to but for our purposes I consider it the SteamApps\Common\fallout new vegas folder (the one with the data folder inside), where we install all of our mods. Thasic
Thanks for the reply. It seems by luck or divine intervention I had installed it correctly already.
maboru
Actually it seems you followed directions without taking any shortcuts like I did! Were you using the old fn4gb before the new NVSE package came out for it?
GothikaGeist
It seems to work well for me, since I was using the 4GB.exe to run Fallout NV. BUT, I know what you mean about inconsistency with 32-bit systems. 3 GB Enabler + leaves 1 GB for the Operating System and 4GB doesn't which means there should be no or little memory for the OS. But truthfully, Fallout NV Doesn't seem to fill my RAM to it's max, it's mainly the CPU that takes the load.
maboru
It doesn't fill my ram either, most I get is @4gb system plus game which is still quite amazing given the age of the game engine and it only being 32 bit. I'm only getting a random crash every three of four sessions now (that's why I haven't been around as much!) But I do still have a consistent hang - every time I close out the game. I can definitely live with that though. (Just have to clean up the Windows registry each time) CPU usage is running 50 - 75% (of an i7) so the 8 threads enabled seem to be actually working now although I can't imagine the old Gamebryo dog can learn that new trick! [i decided to check the Windows AppHang signature and it is Fn4gb causing it. Again, I don't really care because I'm closing out the game anyway but it is curious and could be something on my rig rather than widespread.] Edited July 22, 2011 by maboru
