lostone1993
I need help with steam I will start this if this unliked by mods then lock it, I mean no wrong or harm I need a fully updated steam archive, Something is wrong with mine that will not allow it to update. I need to find out what DONT suggest contact steam, I have asked lots of questions with the reply that they cannot help meDONT suggest steam support articles or threads in the steam forums, I have read and tried all of them believe it or not I have been trying to fix this 5 months now, to get me a steam archive you have to copy the steam folder say to your desktop, go into steam apps and remove any game related files, zip the clean steam folder up and upload it someone temporary so I can use as a diagnostic tool or failing that, I can copy my steam apps folder in, log in, update and put it into offline mode None of my friends can help me, They have not updated in months and refuse to go online after my troubles again if any of this seem piraty or anything like just dont do it and mods lock this thread as simple as that I will not ask again I only ask because I fear this is my only hope now to get steam to run if interested it gets stuck at 99% and silently crashes or 26%, I am on windows vista

Iv000
I don't really get it.You can't run steam? Or you can't update it?I guess you tried to uninstall steam and then install it again?
Vagrant0
Best bet is to backup your game files and reinstall Steam. Sounds like something got corrupted somewhere or you have a game which is blocking steam functions somehow. Make sure you have enough free ram when updating, and that your pagefile is large enough. Updates for Steam (and most other things) are usually parsed through RAM or pagefile as they're being applied. I don't know why it would be more than you have free, but could see it possible if it's been a long time since you updated anything. Needless to say, if you have any "no-steam" patches, these would interfere with steam and should probably be removed.
lostone1993
nope, steam updates too 99% silently crashes and does not go near my ram capacity, I have no no-steam patches as tempting as they are, I think steam and my internet (i have satalite broadband) dont like each other which is weird since it worked before, I have tried installing and uninstalling steam about 10+ times now. But i will increase my page file as attempt, il try just about anything now
Vagrant0
Try installing steam from a recent online source http://store.steampowered.com/ rather than from the version that came with your games. This should be a reasonably up to date version containing more recent data. When updating, does it just hang at 99%, or does the application actually close? If it just hangs at 99% it may be initiating install procedures and give the impression of locking up as this may take a good deal of time. If the program itself doesn't close out or throw up some error dialogue, you should just leave it for awhile without touching anything and come back in 20-30 mins to see if there is any change. lostone1993
ok it updates to 99% I leave it for 30mins - 1 hour, and it has closed thinking it is done, double click to open steam and it comes up updating steam again works its way up to 99% leave for 30mins - 1hours closes etc also i have the installer from there, but incase you didnt know the installer from there it from early 2010
Vagrant0
Then best I can suggest is to completely uninstall steam and any games that use steam, thoroughly check your registry for any elements related to steam, install steam just on its own, and try updating (make sure you save your game files and passwords first). If that doesn't work, you really are going to just have to contact steam and go through the lengthy customer support process.
lostone1993
I have another idea, I am getting an up to date files from a friend, this should tell me what might be the problems also i have been though the customer support, been there done that with the response of pretty much "your on your own, fix it yourself" I think my problem may be my internet connection or perhapes because i am using an extended ethernet lead
