Radstorm Siren & Increased Feral/Children of Atom activity/raids

(Edited) Hello mod authors,

I would like a mod that introduces a new constructible, the Radstorm Siren. In its basic vanilla option, that siren would know when that particular weather was now active (the game can indeed offer up which weather is active; the author of True Storms said as much to me), and sound off the siren a few times. In hardcore optional, that siren would do more than that, so:

1) Alert guards to start searching (looking for the enemy mode?) until the radstorm ended;

2) Alert non-guard settlers to go inside at least, perhaps to their closest "radstorm shelter" a player has crafted from the already existing structures in game (regular non-guard settlers might be attracted to go to a specific rug or furniture piece as part of this mod) when that siren goes off (a rug?);

3) During the radstorm, for every hour (or so) of that storm in game, feral ghouls or children of atom have a high chance of spawning outside the settlement and attacking. Those chances are below average (25-50% or something), but are significantly increased if the settlement lights and machinery are active (up to 75% or better). Basically, the glow of settlement and sounds are carried quite far in storms, and ferals definitely love noise and bright lights!

4) When the siren goes off for a few cycles, it stops and also turns off anything attached to it. So, to avoid the near certainty that ferals or children are likely to see a fully lit and noisy settlement as they come out to enjoy the weather, a settlement would setup all that noisy machinery and lighting to one main killswitch: the Radstorm Siren. Turrets being included in the noise factor might be an optional menu item.

5) When the weather changes from radstorm, the siren blows again (All Clear!) turning on all the things attached to it. Settlers come out, guards go back to their normal business, etc.

As an RPG item alone, a Radstorm Siren makes sense. It's bad to be out in a radstorm, m'kay? However, ferals and the children love a good radstorm. It made sense too that they might pop up and be annoying. This increases the settlement attack chances as part of the vanilla attack structure for settlements or standalone, though whether the game would allow the Settlement Being Attacked pop-up is another thing altogether.

For those of us using True Storms, there are at least two proper radstorm types as well as radiation rain. Those of us who chose longer duration storms would be in for quite a ride! For those of us using War of the Commonwealth, perhaps a patch or something that adds these kinds of settlement raids to it/vice versa?

In one scenario, a player might build a generator attached to a siren, and all other equipment, lights, and powered turrets to the generator. Radstorm comes up, siren goes off and turns off the generator. Without a generator, all other equipment goes offline too. The player could choose to manually reactivate the generator though. Of course, generators not attached or equipment not attached would continue. As the game definitely knows if the settlement has power, the amount of power by itself could be a useful tool to increase or decrease the % chances. When the siren goes off, turning off whatever is attached to it, the mod would then look at the power (and possibly the defense ratings) to determine % chances.

Obviously some defenses aren't powered, so not sure how that would work. Power, however, would be important. Very high happiness might lessen the chance of attack too simply based on the idea that happy settlers are happy to comply with the idea of a radstorm siren, and aren't just being jackasses by leaving lights and equipment running.

I think this is an outstanding idea. I was a kid in the 60's and different sirens for different warnings were commonplace. We even had drills in school where we would have to drop on the ground and hide under our little desks. :) I'm sure you can find decent audio of the sirens that were in use.

Ghoul and Children of Atom attacks during these storms is also a nice little idea and touch of immersion into the world.

I hope someone takes your idea and runs with it.

I hope so too. I've been hounding mod authors with somewhat related mods to add it, but you know . . .. I spent a while chatting with the mod author of War of the Commonwealth, trying at every turn to suggest feral attacks would make sense during radstorms even if there were no siren related portion. Didn't seem like a go for that author. Ha!

As an update, I asked the mod author of True Storms if the game itself knows what weathers are active (meaning, it can give the mod author data about the actual weather). It can. So this mod definitely can tell the siren to go off when the radstorm kicks off.

  • 1 year later...

No one took you up on this? Man I wish I had more mod experience because this would be absolutely fantastic. I found this thread simply by searching for a radstorm warning siren but seeing your idea of also introducing ghoul / COA attacks got me really excited only to then see 1 person replied... shame. 10/10 would play
