Mods Not Working

predicament

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am extremely new to the whole modding aspect of Oblivion. I have a short and sweet question. Ive downloaded two house mods, i extract them, and i drag and drop all the files from the extracted house mod folder into the bethesda softworks/oblivion/data folder. i start the game, click data files, check the boxes, hit ok, and nothing. I cannot find these house, and i know for a fact im in the right spot as there are maps online to said houses. i need some help, both mods claim they dont need any other mods to install them. One of the mods is Orange Road Cottage, the other is Imperial Manor v7. I found both of them on this site. (sorry, dont have the links) any help would be appreciated.

Is Oblivion installed in the default directory? If so move it out of \Program Files with the help of this guide.

This is only relevant if you're running Windows Vista or 7. Windows UAC prevents mods from working.

First guess, you are the latest victim of the Windows UAC - an overzealous security feature in Vista and Win7 - (NOT in WinXP )that thinks mods are trying to change a program (they are) and acts to prevent that without bothering to tell you. As the game was designed before UAC, and the vanilla game works fine with it, Bethesda has done nothing about it. Best solution, uninstall and reinstall in a location outside of the folders that are protected by UAC - Program files and Program files x86. Best place - Make a new folder just for games - C:\Games - then install all games there in their own folder - such as C:\Games\Oblivion and for steam games, C:\Games\Steam - steam will find it and use it.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the WIKI section of the Nexus

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

Or the route I prefer... disable UAC completely. Yes, I know it can be a great boon to some people, but I always found it annoying and intrusive.

Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts > Change User Accounts Control Settings > Drop bar to Never Notify, reboot.

Now, I will give a disclaimer at this point. Yes, UAC makes your computer less secure and more vulnerable. I am only giving you your second options besides moving the install location if you don't want to. My personal choice is to disable UAC because I am the only one that ever uses my computer, and I keep a /very/ close eye on what goes on with it. For the average user, I wouldn't recommend disabling the feature, but the choice is yours in the end.

P.S. Ben! I've missed your signature. :) The top line reminds of why I always have to disappear from here for a few months at a time... it just gets bloody stressful sometimes with long modlists!

Another work around is to relocated your entire oblivion program into the root C:\ drive. Windows has special restrictions on the program files and program files x86 folders which causes the UAC thing to come into play. I run Windows 7 and have had no issues with mods or windows trying to get in the way :P of course I actually copied my oblivion install from a windows XP system and dropped it onto my windows 7 system without installing :D
