Washington D.C. Vacation

Ok so I just got back from my vacation to Washington D.C. This was the first time that I got to go to my nation's capitol just to tour and look around at monuments and such. I know that the Bethesda offices are based out of D.C. (one of the metro stops is even named Bethesda), so I can understand why they would know a good bit about the landscape and such. But frankly, I was just overly impressed by the amount of accurate detail that they put into a game! The metro was vividly accurate and I loved going to places like the Jefferson Memorial just because of its significance to the game. So, basically I wanted to start this topic to get some discussion going about anyone that lives in DC or has visited it and what your reaction was! I guess the proper term would be "nerdgasm" but whatever it was, I loved being there just for the significance of landmarks in the game.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to add: originally I had the game for my Xbox (GOTY, of course), but going to DC and actually seeing the monuments inspired me to go get the GOTY PC version. I really am a nerd, I believe.

I have lived in the DC Metro area for a number of years now, and while I have not been to the places in the city I have been to the areas out around it. One of the places that I have gotten close to is Raven Rock, which is an actual location here and off limits to civilians. One of the neighbors I had when I lived on Fort Detrick was actually stationed at Raven Rock as one of the guards. The details that the game has is pretty accurate, but it does leave out things that I know are done to help compress the game area as well as keep some actual locations from being known. ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Yea. My wife & I went to DC about a year ago and just spent two days walking around listening to the GNR playlists we had on our respective mp3 players.

It was quite a trip: both literally and figuratively. Walked 12 miles in 2 days (not counting inside the museums). Yes the detail was quite good.

Highlights: looking for the basement in Arlington house. Noticing that the Lincoln Memorial is carbon copied. Buying Souvenirs at the Jefferson Memorial gift shop. Looking at all the mutants/politicians wandering around the capitol building.

its accurate but not very accurate, such as the national mall is much longer and there arent buildings so close to it, and there arent nearly as many. the washington monument is also in the middle of its own very large space.

the pentagon is much bigger, and has parking lots around the perimeter, and has several highways next to it

the metro interiors are fairly good

raven rock is a real place but its mostly exterior not a bunker(but it does have one)

to my knowlege there is no presidential metro but there is an escape tunnel

there are metro stations on the national mall not next to it on street corners

basicly they made it mostly look like DC

i have lived in DC for 15 years
