upgrading laptops

Recommended Posts

ok so i know its like super hard to do and stuff, but i have a broken ASUS G51v (something with the mobo im guessing, it simply doesnt work. doesnt turn on doesnt receive power or anything) can i take like the Ram and maybe the CPU and the Gfx Card or anything and put it in my crappy Toshiba laptop? or are those parts specifically made for the Asus

im just curious, my Asus was a little better equipped to handle game, but my toshiba cant do jack crap, so if i can take any of the parts from my Asus and put them in my Toshiba to increase its performace at all, to hold me over until im ready to build my PC (which could easily be as late as next June or so) then that would be great!

though im assuming it cant be done, and if it can, im not so sure if i REALLY want to, id hate to mess something up and then be out of a PC till next summer period!

anyways thanks for sharing your knowledge!

There are likely only two or 3 things you can take from your Asus that would be likely to work in your Toshiba:

The Hard Drive

The RAM

and Disc Drive

sadly, none of these are likely to improve the gaming capability of your Toshiba laptop.

However, if your Asus was much newer than your Toshiba, even these things may not even be interchangeable.

My best advice is to salvage the hard drive from your Asus, put it in an external hard drive enclosure, and just use it as an external hard drive. Make do with your Toshiba laptop until you can afford a new laptop, and then make another external hard drive out of your Toshiba laptop. Another idea is if your Asus hard drive is a good capacity sata drive, you could upgrade a PS3's internal hard drive with it.

Hope this advice helps.

Edit: Another idea is you could take the parts from your laptop, buy an ITX motherboard, and build yourself a NES PC

You may be able to salvage the RAM and use it in your toshiba, that would likely be the one performance enhancement you could do, but keep in mind that anything more than 3 gigs of RAM won't do you any good unless you're on a 64-bit operating system. Typically the RAM can be accessed by removing one or 2 panels from the back of your laptop. It ought to be pretty simple to determine if they're the same type of RAM, just by looking at them. I won't write much detail on how to install or uninstall the RAM, because Google will probably give you better visual aides and instructions from those more qualified than myself.
