Why I like History

One of the reasons I like history is it shows just how crazy we were as human beings and just what was acceptable back then, that would horify us today.

like this

Soccer became one of the most popular sports of the masses due to its popularity as a war game. A game of "football" which the British called it, was played in the east of England during the 8th Century where the head of a defeated Danish Prince was used as the ball.

King Edward III from England passed laws in 1331 to abolish the game and Queen Elizabeth I had a law passed that provided a one week jail sentence for anyone caught playing soccer.

For 300 years from 1066 to 1362 the official language of England was actually French.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's."

The penalty for killing a cat, 4,000 years ago in Egypt, was death.

:

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.

John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.

Both Presidents were shot in the head.

Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.

Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.

Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839. Lee

Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'

Kennedy was shot in a car called a 'Lincoln' made by Ford.

Booth ran from the theater and was caught in a warehouse.

Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials! And here's the

kicker:

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland.

A week before Kennedy was shot, he was in Marilyn Monroe.

Creepy, huh?

To add to your quote:

John Wilkes Booth became a Confederate militiaman during the US Civil War.

Lee Harvey Oswald defected to the Soviet Union while in the Marines during the Cold War.

History is one of my favorite subjects, especially early/high medieval history and the Cold War.
