THe reason Arena and Daggerfall had so much land to wander was because it was all randomly generated. And you thought people complaining about Oblivion being generated was bad.

yea... my thoughts exactly... to remake those today, they'd still have to randomly generate it. Is there even any modern day games doing something like that on the large scale?

...Minecraft? Some other Indie games do it as well. But most big company games shy away from terrain generation because it doesn't work with a lot of playstyles.

There's also the issues of:

1. Consistently generating interesting content. Remember oblivion's randomly-placed hills and trees and everything looked the same? Yeah.

2. Ensuring connectivity (and playability in general). In a game that simulates gravity, you have to make sure the player can't fall down a hole somewhere and get stuck.

Neither of these problems are unsolvable, but they're difficult. Not just difficult in the "make the developers work harder" sense, difficult as in the Subset Sum Problem difficult.
