Subvert5
Heh, I always thought it'd be cool for someone to do an entire TES game (pre-3d) Zelda-style.
Lehcar
Remember how big Arena is though...? I could help them http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/wink.gif
ub3rman123
THe reason Arena and Daggerfall had so much land to wander was because it was all randomly generated. And you thought people complaining about Oblivion being generated was bad.

Is there even any modern day games doing something like that on the large scale?

But most big company games shy away from terrain generation because it doesn't work with a lot of playstyles.
marharth
Yea the size and generation could be a problem. They would either just put in the generation, or make the map much smaller if they did a remake.
Alcrin
...Minecraft? Some other Indie games do it as well. But most big company games shy away from terrain generation because it doesn't work with a lot of playstyles. There's also the issues of: 1. Consistently generating interesting content. Remember oblivion's randomly-placed hills and trees and everything looked the same? Yeah. 2. Ensuring connectivity (and playability in general). In a game that simulates gravity, you have to make sure the player can't fall down a hole somewhere and get stuck. Neither of these problems are unsolvable, but they're difficult. Not just difficult in the "make the developers work harder" sense, difficult as in the Subset Sum Problem difficult.

El`derina
They could just make it only fast travel possible between points of interest, and box everything in... but god i would hate that
LadyGodiva
I agree. I really want to experience Daggerfall and Arena but I can't bring myself to it because of the graphics...
