Candex
Hi! Yesterday I did my first edit to an armor mesh ever. I followed this tutorial, and everything was apparently ok. Mind you I am very new with Blender so I'm still figuring out north and south with it. The armor is designed for the lower body of HGEC. The original is one piece that covers all the lower body, even the feet, so I deleted them in order to be able to wear any other shoes with it. I deleted the feet after Step#7(deleting the skeleton) and before Step#8(saving as blend. file) Everything seemed to go according to the tutorial except when it was time to add armatures (step#19). The armor already had armatures with it. I deleted the existent ones and added my own. The tutorial says "this should be done with each piece", so I guessed each piece was each part you could select. This armor had three pieces under my understanding: the armor itself, the chainmail underneath in the legs and more chainmail in the pelvis area. So I added one armature for each.Looking at it in NifSkope I couldn't find anything out of place, but since I'm new I probably am overlooking something. I also made sure all objects had a correct texture path. And I opened the CS and created my new armor. I put it in a crate. When I played the game I tried the armor, and it took a bit to show up- the original does not take as much. I also experienced a nasty fps drop, from around 18 to 10-12 or so. The original armour does not cause any fps impact. Still I could wear the armor fine, with and without any other footwear, and everything looked normal when running, jumping, etc. Anyone got a clue on what did I do wrong? Help and any sort of plain english explanations are very welcome. Thank you! :teehee: Edited August 13, 2011 by Candex
LHammonds
You import the skeleton only one time but each object needs to be parented correctly to the skeleton/armature and each object must reference the "Scene Root" name in the OB field. Also, if you just deleted the armature, save the .blend, close Blender, then open the .blend again, select everything and then import the skeleton with the option to "Import Skeleton Only + Parent Selected." If you don't, you might end up with the Scene Root (armature) being named something like Scene Root.001 which will not work right. Candex
Thanks for the reply LHammonds! Unfortunately I am more confused now. :psyduck: I think I have some serious problem importing skeletons. At its best, following this other tutorial, I can only managae to import the skeleton named as Scene Root.00. However the Links and Materials box shows an option to choose from Scene Root and Scene Root.00, and when I select them the skeleton changes, as if there were two skeleton objects. I don't know if this is normal or not. If I delete the skeleton with object mode enabled, both skeletons are erased. This spoiler shows my previous edits to the post until I reached to this conclusion..I deleted the armatures after importing the skeleton. I am not importing the skeleton again, since you just said to import the skeleton only once. So I deleted them, armatures, which by the way had nothing written in the OB field, saved the file, closed blender, open blender and now... time to add the armatures. I click to add the armatures. Whenever I try to write 'Scene Root' in the OB box, it does not allow me. The box goes back to empty as soon as I hit enter. Last time(my first attempt) I deleted the armatures and added my new ones without save-close-open again, and it did allow me to type Scene Root in the Ob box.Maybe I need to delete the existing armatures before importing the skeleton? I will try that also.Maybe I did something wrong and I didn't notice? I will start over from scratch and see what happens. What confuses me is that the previous attempt at getting this armor works fine in-game, but it kills my FPS (7! 7 fps with the inventory opened! gosh!). Why would something like that happen? I'll keep on trying and if I fix it I'll post which way worked out for me. Thanks again! EDIT: After several attempts I still get the imported skeleton named as Scene Root 001. It's almost as if two skeletons were imported: in the Links and Materials box, when I select the skeleton, I can choose between Scene Root and Scene Root 001. I tried to import it before deleting the meshes, after, with and without closing Blender.... I still wonder what am I doing wrong. Maybe some import settings? I have more options to select when importing than what is shown on the tutorial. I made sure the Import skeleton only + Parent selected option was selected.:wallbash: I always saved the file as .blend and exported to .nif at the final stepI always closed Blender to flush the scene root memoriesI always made sure the import skeleton and parents enabled option was selected. I'm clueless.:ermm: Edited August 14, 2011 by Candex
LHammonds
I don't know about the FPS drop as I have not experienced an export-only problem like you are describing. I think you are not deleting all the armatures. If you are importing an armature and it comes in as Scene Root.001, that means there was a Scene Root already there. You cannot type "Scene Root" into the OB field unless there is an object called "Scene Root" so that has to happen after you import the skeleton. Are you using the skeleton from this? Full Human Male and Female Topless Import-Ready Body 1_0 When you think that you've deleted the existing armatures, you need to verify it by looking at the Outliner --> View Oops Schematic. In this view, you can see if you have actually removed all the Scene Root copies. LHammonds
Candex
Caught the bugger! There is a Scene Root shown in the Oops Schematic. It is unlinked to anything (transparent background box) and appeared only after I toggled the show armatures button (the one with the man-icon). I have no clue on how to delete it. I can't see or select it in the 3d view window, and it will not show up in the Outliner in Outliner Mode. Yes, among many other things, I also tried importing the skeletons from the Full Humans. The result was always the same since we now know I'm sort of dumb and can't delete the Scene Root properly.
LHammonds
Try this. Select each object, one at a time and move it to layer 2. When done, only the objects you want to keep should be in layer 2 and invisible. With only layer 1 active, press "a" to select everything (which should grab scene root) and press delete to get rid of it. Save the .blend and exit Blender. Start Blender, open your file and see if the scene root is gone from your schematic view. Keyboard Notes: - Press 1 to view layer 1 - Press 2 to view layer 2 - Press ~ to view all layers at once - Select an object, press "m, 2, ENTER" to move that object to layer
Candex
GENIUUUUUUSSSSSSS WOOOHOOOO IT WORKED!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I'm so happy!!!!!!!! The invisible scene root was selected only if edit mode was on. But it worked. Now I'll import the skeleton and see how it goes!:woot: Edit: And it works like a charm in-game! My guess is that the fps drop was caused by the second Scene Root? Anyway thanks again!! Edited August 15, 2011 by Candex
