i am in need of a new quite cheap computer to run fallout 3 and the GECK. i think i have found one which would tick all the boxes and i just need it to run it without endless stuttering but i could deal with the odd game crash or freeze. i am a modder and will also be making mods on it so if anyone has any advice please help me out!

i have already found one so could you advise me as to whether it will work or not. this is a link to it: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-pavilion-slimline-s5615uk-m-refurbished-desktop-pc-08623417-pdt.html (read its full description)

Yes that should work, but make sure the PSU (power supply) can handle the Graphic card,.it will depends on the graphic card you want to buy..ATI Radeon 6870/6850 need at least 500W PSU..see here for more details of PSU that certified for ATI graphic card...click on 'details' link

usually power supply that shipped with build-up PC is the kind of weak PSU..I can't see PSU is listed in that link..

also, personally i'm not familiar with AMD,and the CPU type you want to buy..because this related to overall performance, if the CPU is too slow and you use powerful graphic card this will get bottleneck, you need also to replace with more powerful CPU...

if you need more advice and better/more answers you should make new thread here : http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/forum/123-hardware-and-software-discussion/

Unless you want to spend a lot of time banging your head against the wall, stay away from those cutesy slim cases. :wallbash: 90% of the current crop of game oriented video cards will not fit. Plus they usually use a proprietary power supply that is expensive to upgrade if it can be done at all. And, they usually do not have the capability to add any extra cooling (most are undercooled to begin with). IMHO they are only useful for someone who will only be using them for general office work, surfing the internet/facebook, or possibly as a TV/video (non gaming) setup.

Many of the newer graphics cards will not even fit in tower cases that are more than a few years old. :whistling: Check the dimensions on BOTH the card and the space allowed for graphics cards in the case you are considering. Check card length vs case space. Check card height vs case inside height - remember to include the height that will be taken by the motherboard. Check card width to be sure you will have enough width - many video cards take up 2 bays covering up the non video slot on one side. and they can cover critical ports on the motherboard making them inaccessible.

500 Watts is about the minimum I would recommend for a power supply in a gaming rig. DO NOT scrimp on the power supply as it will need to be stiff enough to run everything with no power droops and be reliable enough to keep from damaging other components.
