Fallout: Hawaii?

Just thought I'd put an idea out for a story:

During the war in Anchorage the Chinese managed to capture one of the Western Hawaiian islands and turned it into a base of operations for the pacific in the years before the great war.

None of Hawaii was directley bombed in the war, but affected by the fallout, making it prime real estate for many European and American companies that survived, and the remenants of the Chinese base went into hiding.

There were many conflicts between the new arrivals to the island and the tribal remains of society that had resided there for hundreds of years, but ultimatley, the companies took control of the island due to larger numbers and a technological advantage.

Over time, the Chinese remenants began growing in numbers and set out to finish their ancestors mission, destroy the capitalist world (or something).

It would contain themes relating to North American/Hawaiian western settlement along with far right vs far left political warfare (for any literature junkies out there)

Penny for my thoughts?

Great Idea. Though I think the tribals wouldn't be subjugates so much as made vassals, i.e. local lords get promoted/supported and they strip mine the lower castes together.

It also wouldn't take too long for the Europeans to take over. Though which European faction is rather debatable; the more powerful/influential lords could be jostling for the favor/support of different nations, and vice versa, i.e. France loses a colony to England, France retaliates by bribing an English colony's tribal leaders into open revolt.

Typically, I spent the last two days destroying something I spent hours fussing over; more rebuilding than building. :psyduck:

For future reference, withold such indulgent frivolities as individually arranged sandbags until after the general layout is confirmed.

I was highly dissatisfied with the hasty western end of the defenses; this, along with the uneven (IMO) arrangement of the guns made me scrap the whole thing..

like so.

(+ sandbags)

To my unyielding chagrin, I discovered the "sidewalk" pieces, which were aesthetically and practically superior to the handplaced concrete slabs.. :wallbash:

In for a penny out a pound, or something like that. I extended the docks to make room for a "tunnel" piece which will serve as a "scar" from a German "pirate" raider...

The Germans shot first, but the locals fired last.

Contact between the Big Isle and everywhere else is limited largely to allied Enclave commerce and reinforcements (the Enclave can afford neither at the moment) and the sporadic European raiding party out for tribal slaves, unguarded crops and the increasingly rare ambitious ambitious captain dreaming of a glorious bout of looting at Hilo or Ka Lae.

Doesn't end well.

I also found time to add towers & rework the terrain around the gate.

We already figured out the plot, adding Chinese would not make sense.

The plot is a series of notes and ideas; easily rewritten. Considering that I spent 3-4 days outlining Hawaii in GECK, (then painting terrain, then outlining the height levels) and ended up using the first blank copy, and that I now spent 2 days rebuilding >5 hours of solid work (ending up with less than I had to begin with) rewriting a conceptual plotline for a series of islands that in all likelihood won't even be created until the new year is quite reasonable... I'm constantly rearranging the storyline in idle minutes between other work/projects.

In any event, I agree that the Chinese wouldn't "invade" as they aren't trying to prove a point- just like any other "Communist" country, Fallout-China is only paying lip service to the Marx Ultra-Hippie Anarchist theories; they don't give a rat's @ss about the proletariat, any more than the capitalists.

They might even be cooperating with the Euros! The Russians are there (though they seemed to have switched roles wrt RL China/USSR) and there are bound to be splinter groups/elite conspiracies in China- as with any other Fallout organization.

The Gov't would pass it off as "deserters" and "reformed reds" who came over for the good of the nation, when in actuality they're just more corporate/political big wigs conspiring with other corporate/political big wigs to build a little (self-sufficient) paradise far from the war and farther from danger.

Damn, that looks really good. It's coming along really well.

This is astounding.... o_O

I'm really looking foward to seeing this completed. ^_^

If possible i'd love to see you'd be willing to work with my studio in some future projects.

Weeellll....

I have a long way to go before this is anywhere near completion, and there are two other projects I'm working with.

What exactly do you have in mind? And could you work/help with this?

I understand.

And I have two things in mind:

-a Japan quest (which you talked about in another thread)

-a North Carolina quest (to find the remnants of USMC)

As for stuff that can do to help.

I can write quests, story lines, map layouts and come up with character and creature designs.

Writing is my strong point but the more the merrier. Navmeshing is another potential foul up, and while I'm obsessive about context-specific world places/ideas, I have difficulty forcing myself through the general "attachments" as in the rest of the map. IE I'd work feverishly on one city block and then largely ignore the rest of the island. By character designs, do you mean texture/model work?

What I/the mod needs most is models and textures. A LOT of heavy detail, scratch build, static models and textures. Oahu in particular will be as difficult to build as every other island put together.

Hence why I'm starting in the Big Isle. No imperials, no custom buildings, only plants, items and a creature or two.

Also the Oahu airship I'm waxing over would serve as a modular travel system. I'm imagining a scaled world map on the bridge with an "active-passive" overlayer, i.e. each location has two overlapping icons/activators that represent where the player is. A script would assign "coordinates" (just a pair of numbers; the actual location is purely the result of the activator's position) to the activators and the map would be scaled so that each pixel is 25 kilometers. The manually guided (and controlled- they had two steering wheels & the men controlling them would literally be maneuvering the ship by force, as in cranking a lever manually) Hindenburg had a top speed of ~135 KPH so a post-modern futuristic airship should have little problem cruising 100 KPH.

So a travel script calls up the current "active" layer (has a unique graphic, i.e. the Pres-seal for a You are Here thing) and the selected "passive" layer does the distance/pythagorean formula to get the distance between the two locations, divides by 4 and adds that number of hours to game time. The earth's circumference is ~40K km and you'd only ever need to fly half that (otherwise you'd just go the other way around) and at 100KPH for 24/7 automated floating you'd get anywhere in the world in 200 hours or 8 days max.

The PC could be anywhere in the world in about a week at most, so a travel type mod would be a natural followup after this big boy gets finished.

Still a long way to go. RL hasn't left much time with the GECK lately, and I need to work with the SS project as well as this one.

I started working with Sketchup for "concept art" wrt the airship and eventually Oahu/Honolulu. I doubt that anything I make will useful in-game but it MIGHT help any potential modelers ( :ohdear: ) with a general overview.

I'm currently focusing on the docks, constructing them as they would be post-raid reconstruction.

Just a few more musings on my part.

The requisite Fallout tragedy/bittersweet ambiguity of the Hawaii area is that the Enclave were literally the only thing holding it together; Hawaii's population IRL is ~1.5 million; ~180 years of peaceful expansion and GECK-Fallout Terraforming/infrastructure give a >2 million population on the eve of the Enclave's departure; at the time it was quite concievable that the entire continental US had less people than the Isles. 30 odd years of imperial warfare and Mutant raids have devastated the last piece of pre-war society. All the damage/decay in the mod would have been inflicted within that time period, and before that it was pre-war perfect.

Weapon ideas:

shotgun pistol/revolver

beam cannon- a heavy shoulder firing laser beam with sustained bursts (i.e. hold it down to keep the beam firing) and accurate instant-travel just like the rifles. Can overheat (?), slow reload/recharge, very heavy

arc welder/blow torch- deals insane damage at close range, short bursts, very limited range

hand-nuke; a powerful grenade with radiation, shock wave, emp and incendiary side effects (just like a REAL nuke should have)

acid bomb; corrosive chemicals in a grenade satchel, DOT and lingering AoE (if possible) death patch :nuke:

Phosphorous Grenade?

Thermobaric device?

Depleted Uranium bolts w/ steel crossbow (?)

javelin launcher- throws a giant metal spear to impale foes, silent and powerful

scrap axe/spear/knife for tribals/"woodsmen" and traders/civilians who can't afford/access better weapons
