Fallout: Hawaii?

Modeling is probably the rarest (and most valuable) talents for modding.

This mod's going to need a lot of custom meshes. Trees and plants would be my first pick, but Honolulu needs custom buildings and the airship thing is going to be... difficult.

That's well in the future, though. right now, it's plants and trees, and the occasional scenery pipe dream.

for instance, I mentioned a rebar gate (portcullis) that can open/slam shut on a few enemy grunts.

For trees, I've seen the free Speedtree palms that you can get with certain versions of the Speedtree Modeller used to great effect. They're even over at TESNexus as modder's resources. Same engine, same trees, give attributions and they could be yours.

Soooo....

Hi.

A few weeks of nothing, and a few weeks in the clouds.

In retrospect, I think that I tried to do too much at once; so I'm starting again with "new" worldspaces, to get a fresh perspective/feel for the mod.

Starting with Molokai and maui, I will make several world spaces for different sections of the islands.

among others.

Molokai and Maui have extreme height variations; Molokai, for instance, is a flat plain in the western half, and sheer cliffs and valleys in the east. Having multiple worldspaces per island will exploit this terrain and allow me to bypass more "bland" areas and/or places that would be impractical to represent in game. It also allows for a potential modular division of work; different team members might work on different valleys. As the valleys are controlled by different empires, world spaces organized by ownership (presumably) simplifies scripting when it comes time to conquer them; a palette/spawn pool swap for the attackers, and a constant set for the defenders.

I've reworked pretty much every concept in the mod. The mutants are gone entirely from the main story; the eighth island (Ni'ihau) will be 95% outside of the energy enviro-shield, which will also prevent the vertibird/player from entering directly; the irradiated part will have a military bunker/base passing beneath the shield, which will allow entry/exit. The irradiated part, incidentally, would make a great preview, easily divided from the future islands.

Religion, politics and imperial relations are the main focus; there are three big collectives that dominate the isles.

The Germanic Federation (working title; loosely based on the Holy Roman Empire) is nominally in control of (most of) the Big Isle; in reality it's divided more or less into two camps, the protestant Prussians in the West and the Catholic Austrians in the south. Furthermore, the surrounding states are rather... divided... just like the historical HRE, the "King of the romans" was "elected" by his fellow monarchs, often helped along by bribes... Prussia is larger, wealthier, more centralized, and exerts more control over its subordinates, but Austria is well entrenched in Ka Lae and has the backing of the Holy League, the catholic papacy (de facto Iberians) on the neighboring isles of Kahoo'lawe and Maui, among others.

Speaking of which, guess what the second power is?

The Holy League; centered around the Iberians, de facto allies of Austria, Venice and Genoa are nominal members, with Venice in particular notoriously self serving and uninvolved. Both cities are on Oahu, but have colonies/trade contacts just about everywhere.

Switzerland is a former Prussian state on eastern Maui, which successfully rebelled against Prussia as a result of its Catholicism and its Trade Confederacy (working title) with other states. It is a member of the Holy League, and along with the Ottomans on Kaua'i and a loose confederacy of Norwegian Mercenaries (inhabiting a cruise ship, aircraft carrier, or some similarly large vessel) and Russians in Oahu, and maintains careful ties with France to the northwest; its religious, secular, economic, linguistic, cultural, etc. affiliations are... conflicted, to say the least.

Speaking of France, the French and Dutch are closely allied, with a string of ports, forts and cities from Hilo to the northeastern tip of Oahu under their control. Being Protestant, they nonetheless are on amiable terms with the Holy League and the trade Alliance. They don't trust the British, but then, most of the other powers do, too.

Venice is centered around Pearl harbor, which will be given the brush of Artistic License (also known as terraforming) to make it... similar... to the original city. Its proximity to England, close ties with the Trade Alliance (de facto member) which also includes the rebellious Russians on Oahu (they're too close to the British power center for either England or Russia to be comfortable) and nominal connections with the Holy league make things difficult.

genoa, in the "Marine Force Base" in nothern Oahu, is similarly torn; though its connections to the Holy League and Eastern focus simplify matters somewhat, France is rather close to the city and her colonies; the Holy League's zeal might lead to conflicting goals, and both venice and the Trade Alliance are eager competitors...

In summation,

the big isle is going to be divided up between the "Germanic federation" (90%) modeled loosely after the HRE) and 10% between the Franco-Ducth alliance (in the north, with Hilo being new New Amsterdam) and the south being a catholic Austria, nominally part of the Germanic Federation (de facto member of the Holy League.

Maui will have Catholic Switzerland, Genoese/Holy League colonies, and French/Dutch ports and settlements.

Kahoo'lawe is essentially a cross between Iwo Jima and the Vatican; Spain and the Papacy have a big fortress/palace there. Lanai is Spanish in its entirety, though a "Holy League" port is open to all Catholics and genoa, Venice and Switzerland (and the ottomans/TA, through the latter two) have more or less divided the waterfront between them.

Molokai is French in the north, nominally Venetian (nominally english, pending a transitional ownership transfer) and de facto Trade Alliance (the Venetians own the land, but the Hungarians/Croatians own and operate it in an unofficial TA "lease" from their nominal overlords; it's kind of like Zadar (4th Crusade) only without the... recurring violence... of that era, and both the venetian and English flags overhead are seen as jokes/irrelevant to the actual settlement.

Oahu has england in Honolulu, a russian city state in Diamond Head Crater, venice in pearl Harbor, Genoa is the "Marine Corps Base hawaii" (north Oahu) in kaneohe bay. The French have some territory there (the eastern tip) among others.

The Ottomans have the entirety of the farm-colony Kauai under their nominal control (the English, Genoese and venetians have "trade rights" in certain areas, and the Swiss/TC connections supply the Holy League and France in a roundabout way) and additionally have areas set aside for their "allied" Norwegian/Danish neo-vikings/pirates.

Something just occured to me.

How do we account for the ocean? THe height of Mauna Kea, from the sea floor to the island peak, is greater than the height of Mount Everest... I obviously can't factor that into the game, but am I supposed to have the player able to swim to the edge of the map, somewhere in the Mid-pacific? A rebreather carrying player could go to the bottom of any sea that I make. Draconian depth limitations would allow a rebreather player to swim the bottom of the ocean for miles offshore...

Is there a way to keep the player from getting that far? Some way to place a boundary that hugs the shore?

"Mutant fish are eating you"

About 2 dps at start thens exponential growth till insta kill.
