Noooo you didn't follow the story, enclave wan't to have the power to sell the water, like good old capitalists they are, and poison it to kill ghouls and mutants like good all extremists they are.

You didn't follow the story, either. The Enclave Civil War was initiated by Colonel Autumn because he didn't want to poison the water.

The fundamental conflict between Autumn's branch of the Enclave and the player is whether the Enclave or the Brotherhood of Steel would have jurisdiction over Project Purity. (If there were any doubt who you were working for take a look at what happens to Project Purity in Broken Steel.)

Furthermore, there is no direct evidence Enclave intended to sell the water for profit -- Colonel Autumn appeared to want the purifier to increase the political power and prestige of the Enclave. It wouldn't surprise me if the price of water in Autumn's world was a loyalty oath. He wanted prestige, not money.

What made him evil wasn't his goal but his willingness to kill for unearned fame.

Quite frankly not selling the water was stupid. Every drop of purified water the Brotherhood sent into the wasteland drained them of money, resources, and in some cases lives. Of course they needed to charge money for it, if not at the site of the purifier itself at least for the cost of its distribution. Distributing free water was bleeding the Brotherhood / Rivet City coalition dry.

@harowan - Don't be discouraged man, T'was a noble effort.

I never played FO1, 2, or NV, and am only 10 or so hours into FO3. That being said, i'm a little miffed about all the spoilers in this thread.
